New Cancer Drug From Tree Bark?

I saw this on Drudge last week, and meant to bookmark it, but it was gone again before I could. I did a search with what I thought were pertinent words, but nothing showed up. Did any of you happen to catch this story and can you direct me to it? The drug name started with a “C” but that is all I remember except for the fact that it will take 5 years to approve even though dramatic results have already been seen.

Thanks for your help!

Well, there’s a compound called Taxol that’s made from the bark of the Pacific Yew, but that was news at least five years ago (come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve heard anything about it since then). It doesn’t start with “C”, either, unless we’re dealing with generic and trade names for the same substance. Do a web search on “Taxol” and see if anything there sounds familiar. Try searching news sites as well; even if this is a different chemical the reports might make the same comparison I did and you’ll find it with a keyword search.

The only thing I’ve read in the news recently is a new study showing that Selenium may have curative powers in many types of cancers.

Selenium is a mineral, not a tree…could it be what you are looking for.

I saw it in Yahoo news.

I found it, thanks to your suggestions! The name of the drug is Combretastatin and I found it on a website called CyberMedTrials.org. As I mentioned , it is in Phase I testing in Pennsylvania, Cleveland and in Ireland. In mice it has been shown to actually “starve” a solid tumor to “death”. A shame it will take 5 years to get approval. I understand that other countries’ Drug Administrations are not as strict as ours…

Thank you!
