New Car, SUV or not SUV

I finally drove my current vehicle into and nearly thru the ground. My 92 Mitsubishi Expo likely could have survived another 40-50 thousand miles if I’d treated it better, but I’m mechanically inept as well as absent minded so there was a two or three year period there where the oil never got changed.

So… I need to get a new car.

My requirements?

I want to be sitting as high off the ground as my Expo did. That’s higher than your average car, but a little lower than a full sized van/truck. I think it’s height is about 65 inches. The Expo also had great visibility, windows that were well placed and big. I can’t go for something I can’s see well out the back of. The Matrix drove me nuts because the rear window seemed big enough from the outside but once you are in the drivers seat you realize that it’s not (in my opinion) big enough. The window’s just at a bad angle.

I want gas mileage of at least 20 city. I know I’m compromising with how fuel efficient a car I can get if I’m setting the height requirement, unless I want something that blows over in a high wind that kind of height means comparable width and thus size.
As idiot proof as possible. I can add oil. I can add Wiper fluid. I can check oil. There we have the extent of my mechanical abilities. The last time I disassembled and reassembled an engine it was a lawn mower engine in high school and I enjoyed it but haven’t exercised those skills since.

I went to a car show last weekend (I truly believe my car realized this and that’s why it died yesterday).

My favorites from the show.

Saturn Vue. It’s a Saturn. I like what I’ve heard about their cars, I like their show room and I like composite doors.

Honda Element. This is currently in last place because the only reason I want this one is because it’s SO COOL looking. The outside is kind of boxy but the inside’s just gen-x extreme fun. But I’m barely young enough to be considered Gen x and likely more properly considered the tail end of the baby boomers. I don’t mountain bike or do any “extreme” sports so the car’s really not designed for me. It’s also my least expensive of the 4, and it’s a Honda… Usually very idiot proof.

Mitsubishi Outlander. Pretty much the successor to the Expo. The only one who’s options included heated front seats (hey winter’s over but I do live in Minnesota after all) and aside from a bit of a problem with transmissions in the early 90s Mitsubishi’s have been pretty solid from what little I’ve heard.

Subaru Forester. The only vehicle I’m considering all wheel drive in ('cause it’s a Subaru and there’s no other choice) everything else I’d get front wheel drive because the furthest off road I go is pulling on to a gravel shoulder. Subaru’s also have a pretty good reputation from what I can remember. It doesn’t sit quite as high as the others, but unless it bothers me in the test drive it shouldn’t be too bad. Also the most expensive of the bunch with the options I have selected.

get the Honda. No contest. Look at reliability indexes; Honda and Toyota are consistently at the top of the lists. My Civic is 13 years old, 140k, and gets 35 mpg. My other car is a Toyota 4-runner.

I don’t like Mitsubishi’s crash test record.

As you say, you don’t need the AWD which the Subaru has.

A good web site to go to which has tons of info on car purchasing is www.carbuyingtips.com I followed their advice and saved $5 k off the sticker on my 4-Runner.

Slight Hijack

I just want to add that Hyundai is now dead even with Honda in regards to product reliability, and only 1% away from Toyota. That’s pretty damn good, especially when the price of the vehicles are considered.

??? So the only reason you’re buying an SUV is so that you’re sitting higher off the ground?

So the only reason you’re buying an SUV is so that you’re sitting higher off the ground?

Pretty much. I liked my Expo because it wasn’t an SUV, got reasonable gas milage and good carrying capacity.

I don’t use the carrying capacity anywhere near as much now days but I’ve grown used to being able to see and judge traffic from a higher vantage point.

I didn’t say it was a good reason, just that it’s my reason.

Yep, so I went and looked, but I wasn’t very enthralled by their Santa Fe, so it didn’t make my list. It definitely was not any lack of confidence in Hyundai.

Saturn has a good reliability record, but the Vue is a little new to have too much faith in. They’ve grown on me and I would consider on if I was in the market. I think the Element is ugly and goffy, but you can’t beat Honda’s record. I also like the Subaru, and they also have a good record for reliability. As a former Honda owner, I can certainly attest to their long life (mine had 175000 miles when I follishly sold it). I now have a 96 Saturn. A fine car. If it were me, it would be between the Vue and the Element. Price would be a factor, and at my age comfort and practicality would be big issues as well.

Basically, I have no idea what you should buy. I don’t know what I would buy. This is a pointless post.

Have a nice day, I’m going back to sleep.

Try the Suzuki Aerio. I just bought one. Nice upright seating position, enormous trunk, scads of interior space, excellent visibility. 145 horsepower; mine gets 28 mpg on my daily commute (rural roads).

We went to the Auto Show and sat in everything in the $15K range, and at the end of the show, only the Suzuki and the Mazda Protege were still in the running. Drove them both, and liked the Suzuki best.

Of course, you hav eto get past its slightly goofy looks; I just think of it as “endearing”.

Thanks! I’ll have to look at one in person, but from the specification page I think it’s not going to make it past my height bias.

Also, from my “Build your own” experiment on their page, it can only be special ordered.

My car is no longer functional and I don’t know if i’ll be able to keep using the loaner i have for as long as a special order is likely to take.

In addition to the Honda Element, there’s also the Honda CR-V, which is a small SUV with decent gas mileage (mid-twenties city?). The “small SUV” market is getting pretty big these days, in addition to the CR-V, there’s the Toyota RAV4, I think the Saturn VUE is in there, the Mazda Protege and Ford Escape (basically the same thing), and probably plenty of others I’ve never heard of.

The Subaru AWD models don’t get you up high enough? Because when I lived in Colorado, people swore by them!

You will have fewer choices if you stay away from SUVs but still want height. Hmmmm…

My area is SUVs so I can’t be much help, sorry!

Honda’s in general are very reliable but so are Subbies. By coincidence, Honda just sent me some literature on the Element yesterday. My gawd, its weird looking thing but it kinda grows on you  Either way, I think our next vehicle will probably be a Subaru but we will take an AWD Element out for a burn. [sub]I believe the Element will give you better milage than the Subaru, which is interesting as it looks about as aerodynamic as my desk[/sub]

If you like bizarre looks, did you consider an Aztec? They are absolutely, horrifically butt ugly (I am not going to defend their appearence) but they are selling at a pretty cut rate. You may get a good amount of car for a song if you shop around.

Just a thought.

Current status…

Test driven: Saturn Vue (V4, V6), Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Forester.

Saturn is the strangest and best car show room experience I’ve ever had. They had the cars available to drive, made a copy of my drivers license and then gave me the key. I test drove each without a sales person talking my ear off.

The V4 felt stiff and uncomfortable, the V6 felt like silk.

At the Mitsubishi dealwership, I walked in the door and was surrounded by 8 sales guys who were standing around talking right at the doorway. I almost turned and ran right then.

I persevered and test drove the Outlander with a chatty sales guy nattering on the whole way. Nice, not terrible, not fantastic car. Just didn’t do anything for me.

I went to the Honda dealership next and discovered that Elements sell very quickly. They didn’t have any of the model I wanted to look at 4WD EX. They had one DX, but it’s battery was dead. When I expressed (jokingly) that one of my only reservations was that I felt too old to be buying a car designed for 20 something extreem sports types, the sales guy violated his previous customers privacy and showed me that his last two sales were to people at least a decade older than I am.

He extracted a promise from me to come in for a test drive on Saturday.

I then went to the Subaru dealer and the salesman was nice, he was quiet, he was in fact too quiet to hear and I had to ask him to repeat himself several times.

The Forester is a nice car, it handles great. It’s also too short.

I’m used to sitting at a particular height and the visibility that offers me. The Forester doesn’t have it. It’s off the list.

The Honda salesguy called and said they have 1 of the model I want in the color I want for me to test drive. He wanted me to come in today but backed off and was willing to hold it for me till tomorrow.

I think I’m going to check with other Honda dealerships and if I find what I’m looking for elsewhere call up the current salesguy and tell him that he lost the sale when he started showing me the drivers license from other customers.

I love my CR-V, which is my fourth Honda. I had my last one (a Civic) for 10 years so I can personally attest to their longevity. Like you, I wanted to be able to see (everyone in my area drives the huge SUVs) but I also wanted reasonable gas mileage and I wanted a Honda.

I couldn’t be happier. I get 20 mpg in town and about 26 on the highway. Mine’s an EX – since I keep my cars a long time, I figured I would get exactly what I want.

Good luck shopping around.

I’ll mention the CRV as well. Seems to be a really nice vehicle. Just came back from an auto show in town, and while we went in to look at Subbies and the Element, I walked away most impressed with the CRV. We’re probably going to take one for a burn tommorow.

My only issue with the CRV is the external spare hanging off the back. I can’t go for the extra repair costs that brings if someone decided to bump the back of your car or you back into something.

I filled out the paperwork this evening… pending financing I’ve got a silver Element that will be mine.

Good for you! How did it drive?
