New Comic Books for April 20/21, 2005

Hey, I’m no religious nut! I’m a hipster doofus, Daddy-O!

Oh, yeah – like THAT gets you off the hook. “Big Bad Beatnik Lou.” You’re gonna bore me to death reading Ginsberg and Sanders, now, I suppose.

Bah! >Insert smiley icon <

O’course, you could also come and challenge me on new turf–I hang out on the Unaboard most of the time–unless you’re scared to challenge me on my home turf, rather than neutral ground, of course! (Although…hmm…if you join, it’ll again become neutral turf. There’s a flaw in my master plan.)

Sigh. I’ve made it a point to avoid internet message boards that share a disturbing similarity with Ted Kaczynski’s nom de guerre. But I may drag my sorry ass over there in August.

Feh, I say.* Feh, Bah* and Bleccch.

Strictly speaking, it’s Stark Tower, and it’s not public knowledge that the Avengers operate from there. To the world at large, it’s a business/residential building. No doubt rent is going to be on the high side, but I’m sure there’s no shortage of cover stories available, especially for an old hand like Petey.

If I was him, I would say I’m assisting Tony Stark on several ongoing projects and part of the compensation package was on-site accommodations * and it wouldn’t even be a lie.*

Well, I disagree with the philosophy that taking an hour of memories kills a person, but that’s more a Great Debates issue than a Cafe Society. IC did have some characterization problems - which I acknowledged :

Behavior modification on Batman seems like two shades beyond the pale even for IC’s “Suddenly Sinister” League.

So I’m going to wait and see what the circumstances actually were, before assuming Batman was ‘Brain damaged’. :stuck_out_tongue:

Lessee, What else - picked up Conan, excellent background issue, I think; Ex Machina, consistently good; Space Ghost - conclusion of the mini, with an announcement that another will follow; Klarion, discussed in the 7 Soldiers thread; Superman #215, wrapping up Azzarello and Lee’s run, and featuring some OMAC-related engineered combatants; LiveWires, which I love to death; Fantastic Four, with it’s new creative team - really a ‘meh’ issue, I’ll probably drop i t again now that Waid’s gone; Birds of Prey - I love to see Black Canary and WildCat work together. Appropriately, the relevant episode of JLU airs this weekend. Invincible - Still one of the best superhero books around; PS 238 - Very funny.

That’s it, that’s all.

If you were lucky, you might.

Yeah. Maybe. You know, there’s a new gunslinger in town, Fenris. Maybe he’s even better than you. You better renew, or it’ll be left as ‘might’. Yep.

eeeh, who am I kidding. Going to miss you, guy.

Superman: For Tomorrow has ended. I’m not sure it warrants its own thread so… Am I the only one who REALLY enjoyed the writing on this book? It took a bit of a downturn near the end (I’m chalking it up to rushed writing/editing), but it seems to have gotten poor reviews across the board. Thoughts?

Teen Titans: Fun stuff. The ending caught me completely off guard, although something like it had to happen as Dr. Light wasn’t in custody during Countdown.

Perhaps this is the wrong place for it as it is a manga, but I noticed that Fullmetal Alchemist is avaiable now. Apparently they are attempting to do the same as Ruroni Kenshin and piggie-back off the success of the English translation of television show based on it. Unfortunately, we have to wait until July for the next one, unlike the monthly releases of Kenshin. I say unfortunately with optimism as I have yet to read the manga, but I’m sure it will be awesome.

I’m really loving Young Avengers. We learn in this issue that Hulkling is definitely a guy, and his name is Teddy Altman. Maybe his connection to the Avengers is through She-Hulk? Asgardian’s real name, which I forget, doesn’t ring any bells with anybody, but both his parents are MDs, like Donald Blake and Jane Foster. Come to think of it, have we seen Jane Foster recently? Last time I remember seeing her was sometime in the late 70s, long enough ago to have had Thor’s love child and fobbed the baby off on some professional acquaintances. Hmmm…

Patriot, interestingly enough, is the grandson of Isaiah Bradley, the black Captain America from THE TRUTH and THE CREW, the one who was heartlessly used like a guinea pig a la the Tuskegee syphilis experiments.

Cassie Lang, in spite of Iron Man’s best efforts to discourage her, looks very much at home in that Ant Man costume.

Regarding the woman in your spoiler box, she showed up in the late '80s for a couple of issues, and I think she hung with the Avengers as support staff (a-la that Fabian Stankowitz guy) for a while too.
I think it’s a very, VERY bad idea regarding Bucky/Patriot*'s background. The original series should have been left in “Earth-B” territory.
*I think that name belongs to another company.

Negative. The Patriot is the third man to wear the Captain America costume (Fourth, if you count the black one) Source: That darn What If that built the retcontinuity of WWII. First, the Spirit of 76 wore it, then he died, so the Patriot put it on. The first Patriot died in the… mmm. 80s. He’s been mentioned since then, now and again.
