New content for Planescape: Torment!

Considering that Planescape is out of print, having the discussion in this thread is really not applicable.

I think that the ideal (perfect-world) situation is that the people who make good content get compensated appropriately for it. That is what the ethical situation should strive for. However, even if the developers/government wanted to regulate used copies, it’s just too hard to enforce. Hence why there’s no existing laws on the subject.

Nor do I (not really, at least). I just sat down and played the whole GearsOfWar2 campaign with a friend, on only one copy. As I said, it’s more of an ethical “gray-area” than anything. You’re free to disagree, of course. I just hope that we, as consumers, encourage good games to continue to be released. The best way to do that is with our pocketbooks. “Buying used” just doesn’t really help that cause at all, hence why I just don’t understand it when people who actually like good games (yourself, Just Some Guy ) appear to want to champion the “buy used” argument.

Yeah, good idea. I also enjoyed Planescape, but never finished it. I tried playing it again recently on a new computer, but the spell effects seemed to crash my video drivers :frowning:

Here you go, a nice debate abstracted to the fundamental issue.

(And for what little it’s worth I have purchased three new copies of Planescape; one for myself, two for friends.)

For one thing, by this logic, we also shouldn’t be giving (or even loaning) books to people.

For another thing, the argument doesn’t work because it starts from a very implausible hypothetical situation, and never draws a conclusion from the hypothetical which could plausibly be applied to the nonhypothetical real world. In the real world, lots–lots and lots–of people buy a game when it first comes out. It’s hard to imagine a plausible scenario in which thousands of people patiently wait in line to borrow a single copy of a game.

AHA! So you’re the one who outbid me on e-bay?!

:stuck_out_tongue:

And let’s not forget all those grocery companies getting screwed by people giving each other food! How dare those filthy food-giving whores continue to live in such shame!

So, anyone tried the mods ? What’s the new content like, are we talking simple 2-step quests, entire zones ? Is the new dialogue up to snuff ? Reviews ! I demand reviews !

I’m almost up to the Burried Village, and so far I’ve noticed one tiny quest with some woman who wants you to talk her brother out of fighting someone. You talk to him, say she doesn’t want him to fight, and they don’t fight.

I really haven’t noticed much… and the advertised ‘scales of law and order’ or whatever the object is that’s supposed to show the actual points you have in your alignment, never showed up. I’ve also encountered no new dialog and I don’t believe that there are any new zones.

I’ll update as I play more.

I found that quest also. I’ve noticed little things - Morte getting more chatty etc. I’m not to the buried village yet - so - will also keep you posted

If you ask me too. Unfortunately, I loaned my copy to a friend and never got it back. I thought I would buy it online one of these days, but the article you’re linking to states it sells for $ 100, now…aaarghh!

The article is wrong. You can check Ebay right now, for instance, and see that even the buy-it-now options go from roughly 50 to 80 USD, while auctions can and have gone for much less. The auctions are running a bit hot right now, probably due to the release of the new content… but I’ve seen them go for as little as 99 cents in the last few months.

If you want a copy, you should probably just wait a bit.

Hi smiling, It’d be best if we move that discussion to the other thread. However, to respond:

I don’t think your analogy is applicable, because by giving someone a can of, say, tuna fish, you aren’t consuming that tuna yourself. If you wanted to actually eat tuna, you’re going to have to buy another can. Net result: the tuna producers are compensated a total of two times for a total of two servings consumed. That’s the way it should be.

Giving someone software doesn’t work that way, unless the package is unopened, or otherwise hasn’t been used.

It was fun, but with the amount of reading you have to do in that game it struck me as more of an interactive book than a video game.

Heretic!

Seriously, that has been one of the most common critic : too much text to read (even though actually, you only spend a very small part of the game reading anything. It appears to be a lot only because players have been accustomed to a couple lines long texts : “Go find relic. I give 200 golds”). But that’s what makes the game great, precisely. Characters have depth. That’s the only video game ever that moved me the way a movie or book can. I felt for the NPCs, especially since it’s not exactly all nice and uplifting.

Another little thing:

I think this is new - When I first used Ingres’ teeth on Morte a whole lot happened - and I don’t recall that happening before - so it must be new!

I guess I’m just a purist - I see books, movies, and games as separate things and when a game crosses the line into too much of a book or movie hybrid I get annoyed.

For example I spent most of the day today reading (books) but when I fire up the 360 at the end of the day I really just want to blow shit up / chop heads off / what have you. I have the same problem with games that make gratuitous use of cinematic scenes. Don’t get me wrong, the cinematics in next-gen console and PC games these days are spectacular and I do enjoy marveling at these fantastic works of art. But when I really want to see a movie, I watch a movie, and if a video game has more cinematic than game I start getting frustrated.

Bud, if all you want to do is kill Nazi Zombies, then go do it. Don’t hang around and wonder why people who want something more want it.

New quests in the buried village!

At least it’s new to me. Find Sheryl’s father. A young woman asks you to find out about her father and ask the witch Ulthera to help -> resulting in a candlestick and an empty purse (for now - I haven’t finished it).
