New Doom game - realistic chainsaw gore

It doesn’t look like you can get the monsters to fight each other, and there are never very many of them. That’s a shame.

To quote the tutorial of Unreal Tournament: Look at those gibs fly.

My parents bought Life & Death. I was really bad at it, other than finally managing to diagnose gas or kidney stones correctly most of the time. My excuse is that I was maybe 8. I don’t think I ever performed a surgery correctly.

I’m pretty sure the game you’d want for chainsaw damage physics is Surgeon Simulator.

I’ve got Doom now but I have to wait several hours until the 40 Gb downloads in my slow connection.
BTW the DVD case insert is reversible. Here is what it looks like when you flip the cover…

Classic!

Only two missions in so far but having a lot of fun. Lots of secrets to look for, which is one of the things that really makes Doom “Doom” for me.

As I said, “Classic”.

Are there keys?

From watching TotalBiscuit’s first impressions video, yes.

In terms of gameplay, is it more like Halo or the original Doom?

There are coloured key cards and skull keys, like the original as well as an automap that I had to rely on. While fighting I had to do a lot of “glory kills” to survive which makes monsters drop health and sometimes random ammo. Glory kills involve going up to a stunned near-death monster and doing a brutal execution. You can also “double-jump” later in the game. That makes the combat richer than the original doom. Some of the monsters also jump around the map. It took me a while to understand how double jump works. To do the maximum jump you need to do the second jump at the highest point of the first.
Sometimes you’ve got to kill all of the monsters in an area before you can progress. I think that also happened in the original Doom/Doom 2.
There are also a lot of features that are a bit like an RPG where you can choose which stats/weapons to upgrade, etc. There are also secrets including challenges where you go in an arena and have to kill certain monsters with a certain weapon or in a certain way. If you complete the challenge you get a reward. Apparently there are also secrets that let you unlock the original Doom(/Doom 2?) levels that you can access in the main menu.

I’m also pretty sure that monsters sometimes fight each other - but not often. So this game is a lot like the original Doom. I think some of the Halo games have regenerating health but this game doesn’t.

BTW about the chainsaw: it has cans of fuel which are used up when you chainsaw enemies. The bigger the enemy the more fuel it takes to kill them. If you don’t have enough fuel it won’t let you use the chainsaw on them. (e.g. if you need 5 units of fuel but only have 4)

But one of the big draws of the chainsaw was that it didn’t need any ammo.

Now you can easily kill a huge baron of hell with it if you have enough fuel.

Chainsaw kills drop a bunch of ammo. So it is still a weapon that one can switch to when down on ammo, although this time to force regaining ammo. The way they have it, it just works like a kill button, really, rather than having to grind monsters as in the original. I’m not sure what I think of the chainsaw at this point. I like the game, however.

I’ve yet to master killing the foes with shields.

Does the amount of fuel needed depend on the foe’s maximum health, or current health (i.e., could you wear it down with the rocket launcher, and then finish it off with the chainsaw)? Does it take more time for a larger enemy, making it hazardous if you have multiple enemies still around? If it does take time, what happens if you stop sawing halfway through?

Bought this game a few nights ago because I remember the first one from the '90s, and I remember the original lighting being unbearably dark in spots, but with this one it seems constant. I also downloaded Doom 3 from steam a few months back in anticipation of this one, and with Doom 3 the doomguy had a flashlight. Am I missing something with this one? Is there a flashlight keybind I can’t find? Is it something with my settings? Or am I going to be stuck feeling my way around the rooms for this entire game?

Nevermind. Fixed it with by messing with the gamma settings.

It always takes 1, 3 or 5 fuel cans and I think it doesn’t matter how hurt the monster is. Also like glory kills, the chainsawing animation stops the other monsters from hurting you while it is happening.

Yeah I try to get behind them. BTW you can also shoot the shields and they’ll turn red and be destroyed.
