New Doom game - realistic chainsaw gore

Amen, brother. I switched from the combat shotgun to the pump when they were out in the open. Chainsaw in a tunnel was sweet.

I used to dismember cyberdemons with my chainsaw back in the day; they’re not much bigger than four or five meters.

I’ve used chainsaws that can cut through concrete and rebar, I think they’d handle bone just fine.

Must be hell on the chain.

Even cacodemons were fine for chainsawing, provided that you only had one at a time and could get close (those were the big red floating balls that spat purple fireballs, right?). Many monsters had attack sequences that were interrupted by taking damage, and so you could render them completely harmless with a rapid-fire weapon like the chaingun, plasma gun, or, yes, the chainsaw.

And the fists sucked unless you found a berserk pack, at which point you could punch for approximately the same effect as the rocket launcher. Fun, little-known fact: The extra punch strength did not wear off at the same time as the red vision, but lasted for the entire map. I think the red vision was purely cosmetic in effect.

No, not really. It’s what they’re made for. Contractors use them a lot if they need to make holes in walls for utilities or HVAC.

Ah, how my eyes would light up whenever I saw that little black med-pack. Running up to a demon and exploding the bastard with nothing but your fist… amazing!

Hi has anyone played the Doom multiplayer beta? Does it include the chainsaw? Can you chop up people who are already dead?

No it doesn’t. If you pay attention every different type of monster has their own “getting killed by chainsaw” animation. Every time he kills the same type of monster they die exactly the same. It is basically a small cut scene. Pun not intended.

As much as I love FPS games - including Doom and Doom II - I’m clearly not the target demographic this time around. That’s beyond ultraviolent.

You seem to be right. I had to look very carefully to check that the animations were the same. I think it is still pretty impressive though.

More chainsaw videos:

Why is realism a selling point in a fantasy game? People don’t play games set 100 years in the future, in outer space, because they are realistic.

It’s not so much realism as versimilitude - ie, the expected realism operating within the confines of the fantasy universe.

It’s no different from expecting “realistic” effects for a teleporter in Star Trek or a lightsabre in Star Wars, in many ways.

I use a chainsaw from time to time. In the back of my mind is the thought that if I fuck up, things would get ugly.

I can do without realistic chainsaw gore.

“The Torture Game 2” has semi-dynamic chainsaw gore:

I think by “realistic”, people mean “extra gory”. You can literally saw or shoot enemies into tiny chunks and the gore animations are very detailed.

I m not a huge fan of extra-splattery movies or games, and I liked Doom 3 but it got too repetitive. So I might pick this up at some point if it doesn’t suck and is on the cheapo, but for now I’ll pass.

Groovy

Heck, I think I’d settle for more games where the enemies are clearly afraid, even panicking. The old Alien vs Predator game was good for that, as was Bloodrayne. Not to mention Postal

But, really, I think we can all agree that there’s certainly a need for inclusion of greater representation in the gaming industry for more constructive, non-combative use of games with dynamic chainsaw damage physics. Like in a proper sequel to Life & Death.

15 Minutes of Single Player Hell EXCLUSIVE Gameplay - DOOM

The voice at the start is really cool. I’ve only watched the first minute or so so far because I don’t want the game spoiled.

Recently I upgraded my PC - I’ve got 10 Gb of RAM now (it originally had 2 x 2 Gb) and a AU$180 GeForce GTX 750 Ti.

I was going to buy it on Steam for US$79.95 (AU$106) so that I would have it forever (not limited to a certain number of installations, etc) but then I found out that the EB Games version for AU$89 was for a Steam version and also included a lot of extras and a steel case.

I’ve got a 120 Gb SSD drive and a 500 Gb HDD but I’m putting all of my Steam games on the HDD except for Doom. It is a i3 and it costs AU$300 to upgrade to an i7 (the computer shop is pretty expensive but I bought that 3D card elsewhere). I looked at 3Dmark benchmarks and it looks like i3 vs i7 doesn’t make much difference in their benchmarks - the main thing is the 3D card.
