I’m about halfway through it, and sort of split. Like many, I fell in love with “Generation X”, “Life After God,” and “Microserfs” for their blend of deep humanism and cultural commentary.
But over his last few novels, Coupland has moved into using more and more gimmicky and just plain “kooky” plot devices. After the atrocious “Miss Wyoming” and the pretty terrible “All families are pyschotic,” I thought “Hey Nostradamus!” was a “return to form” and all.
“Eleanor Rigby” seems to be in the middle; it’s his most personal novel since “life after God,” but at the same time, the plot is incredibly gimmicky and contrived. I kind of think he’s turning into Walker Percy (which both a good and bad thing).
Anyone?
