Of course it’s all relative. Six inches of snow wouldn’t even cancel ANYTHING here. Twelve inches overnight might result in rural school bus cancellations.
I’m not trying to pull a one-upmanship here. It truly is all relative.

The entire NYC subway system is being shut down tonight at 11pm, the first time it has ever shut down because of snow! (And I think the entire system has only been shut down due to weather 2-3 times in it’s entire history! Hurricane Sandy & Irene are all I can think of.)
So that says how seriously this storm is being taken here in the city.
Which part? I’m from Bakersfield but have family in Delano and Earlimart.
As a native New Yorker that amazes me. The subways never shut down. I don’t think they shut down in hurricanes when I was a kid. I grew up in the Rockaways and I remember taking the A train in the heaviest of rains. I wonder if they’re keeping the Staten Island ferry going? The only time they shut that down was during 9-11. I know because I was living on the island that day. It didn’t start up again for a week.
How did the grocery stores look in the last couple of days?
So what you are saying is that nobody will be at work and answering my calls? Why does this always happen to meeee!
Fucking nuts for me personally. Not as crazy as you see on news stories, but I went both today and yesterday and it was FAR more crazy than it normally is on regular Sundays and Mondays at the same times. The shelves were nowhere near bare and while the lines were long, I see worse at Thanksgiving. I lost my wallet and couldn’t find a cart so I had a stressful time and freaked out a bit, but for normal people it wasn’t terrible. I thought if I went shopping at 8am today I’d beat the crowds but apparently everyone else figured out that plan too. It was more stressful with too many stupid fucking people in the aisles than anything. “I’ll stand in the middle and play on my phone! And I’ll act like I’m doing someone a big favor when I scooch over 3 inches!”
I’m not panicked, but I’m more concerned about this storm than I have been for previous storms. We just had snow Saturday and we’re due for another storm Friday. I don’t remember '78 but from what I understand a big part of the problem was that it was really two storms nearly back to back, right?
The last few storms we haven’t even had the cable flicker, much less have bigger problems. We were without power for a solid week for one of the 90s hurricanes. So we’ve been lucky lately, but it’s not unheard of for bad luck.
Although I’m inside, I can feel the change in the last half hour or so. The temp dropped and the wind picked up and I’m shivering as I type, while I was quite warm when I opened up my SDMB tabs.
I’ve got my devices and batteries all charging. I think we have an old phone, that is one that doesn’t require electricity to use. I have a lot of back up plans if shit goes bad, but hopefully it won’t come to that.
I’m assuming there will be no school on Wednesday. A few towns have already called the whole week off.
This makes me happy I opted to work from home today (my office is in Waltham).
Glad you and the wife got home ok!
Some trains were shut down once for snow when I lived there (1994-98 but I forget which year was that big big storm?). I only knew them by numbers and had to go look up which ones were referred to by IRT or whichever it was! I usually took the elevated 2 Bronx to midtown.
Here it is – 1996
“in this snowstorm, the transit network did not totally shut down. Buses were not running but elevated lines as well as underground lines were in limited operation.” I remember following NY1 and them saying no one in New Jersey should be on the roads…
I do that every chance I can, even though I don’t live anywhere near where the blizzard is supposed to hit!
Because of the storm, or was that a general comment on their driving ability? :dubious:
The wind is definitely picking up outside. Here’s hoping we don’t lose power!
They have lowered the totals drastically. It may be as little as six inches here. I feel a little duped.
In RI in 1978 for the blizzard- I was scheduled to work evening shift, and as it was snowing an inch an hour opted not to go- those who did, were stuck in the Rog for a week. (Lots of exciting stuff happened ;)) We had 300 lbs of potatoes and fortuitously almost as much frozen cod. This meant a lot of chowdah. House was heated with wood anyway, when the power went out we pulled water up from the dug well, and towards the end of the week I skied over to the neighbors and traded cod filets for pork chops. We watched Governor Garrahy on TV in his Pendleton shirt :), after the electricity came back on. The road we lived on was very low priority so it was a full week before I got out. And yes, this was a followup storm- there was already quite a bit on the ground from about 3 days previous. The drifts against the house were pretty good insulation, too.
Y’all stay safe, and warm, and try not to make any unplanned blizzard babies
Work just sent out an email that they will be fully operational. But…my boss is kind and says stay home if there’s any risk. Hasn’t started yet…
Where is the snow?
It looks like there is 2 inches on the ground max in Trenton, NJ.
And the National Weather Service predictions have suddenly evaporated. Nice!
No, no, it’s all there; it’s just that there was a little noticed change of accumulations in millimeters instead of inches.
Landscaper just cleaned off the sidewalks with a blower…a leaf blower.
The wind is blowing pretty bad up here. I don’t think my Honda Civic would do too well.
Here in southeastern CT I’ve got about 2 1/2 - 3 feet of snow in my backyard. It’s a little hard to tell just how much with the drifting.
A good clip of wind (I can see the snow whirling) has been going all night. BIG drifts of snow, but with the wind a lot of cars don’t have any snow on them (including mine, which I’m fine with).
There’s supposed to be another 12 hours of snow, so no idea how this will end up.
Also – after snow, my apartment complex’s management has decreed that we’re supposed to move our cars to a space that the plow drivers have cleared. But the plow drivers have put **snow **in all of the empty spaces, so looks like we won’t be doing much moving of cars.
