New England Dopers?

Is there anyone from the Providence/New Bedford area out there? I’m new in town and would like some suggestion for things to do.
Thanks,
Blue

I guess not. Surely, there must be some dopers in NE, though.

Nebraska?

Easy one-step assembly instructions.
Pour Beer A in Uncle B.

I’m in the Boston area.

I hear that there are some “good” strip clubs in Providence, if that’s your thing.

Oh, for heaven’s sake, people! Have we all forgotten how to have FUN?

Go to the whaling museum. Or on a nice tour of the Brown University campus. Visit H.P. Lovecraft’s grave, and remember to take your hat off. Have some ice cream.

Uke

Or a milk shake. I think they call them “cabinets” up there.

Oddly enough, the subject of strip bars in Providence came up over the weekend. Apparently, the place to go is the “Foxy Lady,” if that’s what you’re looking for.

[ahem] While vanilla is undoubtedly tasty and strawberry always has its adherents, do try the regional New England specialties, such as maple walnut and black raspberry.

Smack dab right between Providence and New Bedford, as a matter of fact. Exit 3 off of I-195.

Things to do. Uhm. Lemmee think about this one for a minute or 3.

  • Shopping, shopping, and more shopping. Tons of malls (Providence Place, Swansea, Silver City, North Dartmouth), the Fall River mills, Rte 6 in Seekonk, etc, etc, ad nasueum.

Even more museums around here:

  • Battleship Cove in Fall River (you can’t miss it…its the big ship in the Taunton River), the USS Massachusetts, USS Joseph P. Kennedy, USS Lionfish, and a few other ships tossed in for good measure. Good museum if you’re into naval stuff. http://www.battleshipcove.com
  • Fall River Historical Society on Rock St: all sorts of Lizzie Borden stuff (she’s buried in Oak Grove Cemetary down the Highlands if you wanted to go see it)
  • the New Bedford Whaling Museum (as previously mentioned)
  • Luther Store Museum in Swansea (Old Warren Rd and Maple Ave), open seasonally.
  • Freetown Historical Society in Assonet on Slab Bridge Rd. I’m not sure when they’re open. Nice place, though.

Outdoorsy stuff:

  • Horseneck State Beach: end of Rte 88 in Westport. We locals call it our best kept secret…the people who go to the Cape don’t know about it. Its about 2 miles of beautiful sandy beach. Crowded on summer weekends, nice for a winter walk (particularly if you don’t mind the cold).
  • East Bay Bike Path in Bristol. Runs from Bristol to India Point Park in Providence. Beautiful walk or ride.
  • Freetown State Forest: Up behind the North Watuppa Pond resevoir. Parking is off of Slab Bridge Rd in Freetown. Hundreds and hundreds of acres of woodlands. Be careful of hunters and cultists.

Anything else? Born in Fall River, raised in Swansea, you pick these things up after a while…

Jeremy…

Nobody ever calls me after they’ve done something smart.

There’s a little pub in Providence called ‘Leo’s’ (situated under a highway overpass as I recall) that is not only a purely fun little neighborhood tavern, but which also has the hottest damned chili I’ve experienced in me years on this rock.

If it’s still there, and ye find it, let me know. I have a few folks I’d just love to introduce to that chili.

"Roughish place, this. Eh?

Thanks all. I did a little exploring while Christmas shopping, and I guess I will learn my way around eventually. I’ll be just fine as long as I can get to the mall
