New FAR Clause 52.223-18 Bans Texting While Driving.

Now, seriously, I’m all for social engineering through acquisition management. I firmly believe that the Small and Disadvantaged Business clauses have made the USA a better place. But this is ludicrous. It is completely and utterly outside the scope of the Federal Acquisition Regulations, and the fact that I am now required to flow this idiocy down to my subcontractors just ticks me right off.

You are absolutely right, and yet if they are so concerned why is smoking while driving never talked about? Lighting and finding ashtrays while driving is ever bit as bad and lasts so much longer than this would, a person may smoke the entire trip and be doing it. Since most states already have laws about texting (but never smoking) I don’t understand why they would even bring it up in this document, anymore than saying hey, don’t run red lights either.

if the government had a clause stating that contractors were no longer allowed to go around lighting other people shirts on fire from behind without their knowledge or consent it would be stupid only in the sense that it is pretty hard to believe anyone would think that that was acceptable behavior in the first place.

how is this any different? texting is one of the most distracting things you can do while driving a car, you have to be an idiot to think this is acceptable behavior.

(note this is a general you as opposed to the OP, I realized on a quick read that it looks pretty nasty)
