New fillings-D.D.S.es or dental hygienists?

Went to the dentist today, where they decided I needed a couple of fillings. I have the choice of the amalgam filling, which I understand to be the metal fillings we’re all familiar with, and some sort of resin (ceramic?) fillings that are tooth-colored.

If I understand correctly, the resin ones are acid-etched onto the teeth, meaning that less of my original tooth structure is removed. They are also less sensitived to heat/cold extremes. They take a bit longer to apply, but my main concern is cost-my insurance is apparently the only type in the state that does not cover them completely. If I get these, I’m looking at dropping around $150.
The amalgams will require more of my tooth to be excavated to provide a well for the liquid to be poured into. They are more sensitive to heat/cold. However, they are covered, which means I’ll be spending about $13. Yes, $13.

So, if there are any professionals out there who could give me some suggestions, I’d be most appreciative. Do I have everything right as far as pros/cons? How often do the amalgams fall out/need replacing? How important is it to keep my natural tooth structure? Is it worth the money to get the resin, or would I be dropping unneccesary cash for them? (I guess this might be a little IMHOish, so if necessary, bump this one, mods.)

Amalgam contains mercury, and you don’t want to use it except as a last resort. I am not in the field, and there is considerable controversy over amalgam, but there is no good reason to put any amount of mercury in your body voluntarily.

IIRC the white fillings (the resin ones, not ceramic) are softer than amalgam, so they wear out quicker.

There are a wide variety of tooth colored substances that can be used for crowns. My dentist uses different materials depending on which tooth and how much wear it will get. And they all look like teeth. I should also note that they are all more expensive than gold crowns too.
