New Flatlanders Album!

Why didn’t anyone tell me there was a new Flatlanders album? And when did Wal-Mart start stocking music like this?

Imagine my shock when I was absent-mindedly thumbing through the albums, not expecting to find anything I wanted, and came across the new Now Again disk.

“Wow,” I thought. I didn’t know they had reformed.

Not only have they gotten back together, but they recorded one of the best albums I now own. Thank you Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

sigh

Am I the only one of the 20,000 plus members on this board who cares about good country music?

All who complain about Nashvegas/Top 40 pablum then don’t even acknowledge the greatness that is The Flatlanders can now piss off.

Rest easy, my good sir. I just didn’t see this thread. Jimmie Dale Gilmore is one of my musical heroes. I bought the new album as soon as it came out. It really is fantastic. It was such a relief to me that when I moved to Austin, I discovered there were people who made good, real country music, instead of spewing forth lukewarm vomit from third-rate Eagles clones.

As a side note, I just discovered Hank Williams III. Where the hell have I been?

The new Flatlanders album is great, as was their last previous,One Road More, recorded in 1972, to no particular acclaim. It was re-released on an astute British label, Charly, in the early eighties. I dunno ‘bout the rest of the planet, but I do know that a lot of the folks I came up with in Chapel Hill, NC, who are now making money makin’ music grabbed onto that record like a lifeboat. We all absolutely loved it, and it said that you could do that music without the Industry behind it. It was a tremendous influence. It is the one record I would take on that proverbial desert island.

That’s what the individuals of the Flatlanders have done well for decades. Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore have all done music on their own to great acclaim. It’s wonderful to see them go full circle and release an album that gets the notice they should have so long ago. It ain’t a fluke or flash in the pan–these guys know the territory that is now called AltCountry like their best backyard.

So, yep, listen and buy it…http://www.newwestrecords.com/flatlanders/index.html
