New Garbage CD, Copy Protected?

I just tried to listen to the new Garbage CD on my computer, and it gave my CD-ROM fits. No other music CD that I’ve put in before or since had this problem. I know the RIAA was talking about CDs that couldn’t be played on a computer and if this is one of those, it’ll go back to the store, since that’s where I listen to most of my music.

Anyone else experiencing this with this particular CD?

I don’t know about this particular one, but if you pop it into a regular CD player and it works, chances are you’re right.

OKay, turns out there some multimedia hoo-ha that is grinding the CD. I don’t know what that is, because it never pops up, but eventually things seem to settle down and winamp will play it.

False alarm. And I was gearing up for a good pit thread about it

You know, this CD protection scheme could turn out to be the kiss of death for many artists. A rumor of a CD being protected could send sales of it downward. And artists fearing that, may want their record company to release the CD as an ordinary one.

You’re not wrong, capacitor. I do the bulk of my music listening on my computer. A CD that can’t be played on one isn’t very useful to me.

I’m glad that the RIAA, to try and get people away from pirating music and buying it instead, has come up with a “let’s be assholes and treat our consumers like thieves” policy that will surely make people flee from other distribution methods. Now that they’ve effectively determined where I can listen to my own music, perhaps they would like to outline some times for playing it.

The first time I put this in my computer, it played just fine. The second time, the multimedia stuff took over and locked everything up. If you turn off autorun and launch the player first, it shouldn’t be a problem. I don’t think it’s copy-protected – it’s just that the multimedia portion doesn’t seem to be very well written.

Yeah, its not copy protected, at least I assume its not, since I was able to rip it to mp3(for legal purposes, I have to rip to mp3 before I can put it on minidisc, for my own use). But the multimedia stuff does seem to take over, and my old pc didn’t like it at all. My win2k pc didn’t have a problem with it though. The mixer on the cd is kind of cool though, even though I was completely useless with it, it was fun to play with.
