New Indiana Jones DVD, I'm not sure I like it

I have to agree Kaspar, we’ve watched both Raiders and Temple, and it’s amazing to finally SEE it all, since they were incredibly dark via broadcast.

I haven’t checked out the new Indiana Jones DVDs yet, but what does THX has to do with video ?

THX is a lucasfilm audio/sound format. It doesn’t have anything to do with video/picture, unless you’re reffering to something completely different.

Wrong. THX is a standard for both picture and sound. Do you have the Indiana Jones DVD’s or any other DVD that is THX mastered, because they all have a THX setup for audio and video. There is also equipment that is THX certified. But don’t take my word for it, from THX.com:

Same question I was going to ask a couple weeks ago.

The commentaries would be nice, but if all three films were consistently good, I’d buy the set eventually, with or without commentary tracks. However, I loathed Temple of Doom so much that I’d prefer to just ignore it. The way some people feel about Alien 3 or Star Trek V (I agree about the latter, at least) is how I feel about Temple of Doom: an abhorrently stupid movie.

They could release Raiders and Last Crusade as a packaged set and I’d pick it up in a heartbeat. With Temple of Doom in the mix… not so much.

And it annoys me to think that the studio knows this, which is why they’re probably not going to release the DVD’s separately. Please, someone correct me if I’m wrong on this.

THX video setup

There are some screens that pop up with instructions. You follow the instruction and your TV will be set to the right brightiness/contrast color balance so that when you watch the movie it looks as good as can be.

You can get the set for only $45 or so, which averages out to two normally priced movies, one bonus disc, and an extra that you can play frisbee with.

And then sell Temple of Doom on eBay and recoup some of the costs.

Yeah, but who’d buy it?

Jesus Christ! It wasn’t that bad! I’m not that hot about Raiders!

I’m finding this discussion really interesting. Raiders is obviously the best of the three, but I guess I’m the odd man out for thinking that Temple of Doom (even with its clunky dialogue and horrible female sidekick) is a better movie than the godawful mess that is Last Crusade (even including the Connery casting coup). Hmmm.

You guys have to get with the DVD marketing program.

The reason there is no commentary/deleted scenes is because in a year or so there will be a "Deluxe’ edition of the box set, so that they can sell the hardcore fans two copies.

Then, to coincide with the release of a new Indy movie (assuming it gets made), there will be a ‘platinum edition’, probably with some new footage or some digitally altered scenes or something.

Then a year after the movie comes out, it’ll be available on DVD.

Then a year after that, there will be a new box set with all the movies, but with fewer features.

Then a new ‘Deluxe’ edition…

By the time they’re done, the real fans will have paid for the movies three or four times over.

Cervaise, you’re not alone. I prefer Temple of Doom to Last Crusade, even with the faults you name and the uncomfortable treatment of many of the Indian characters and the weird decision to set it ahead of Raiders, which means that Indy’s dismissal of hocus-pocus in the first movie makes no damn sense in retrospect.

Actually, I think the opening sequence in Club Obi Wan may be my favorite from any of the Indy movies.

ToD takes a few too many wrong steps, but LC just seems like it’s going through the motions. Alison Doody’s character is a total washout, Marcus Brody and Sallah lose all of the charm they had in the first film, and lame jokes like “no ticket” and having Hitler sign the Grail diary just sit there and stink up the joint.

Neither sequel really recaptured much of the tone that made Raiders a phenomenal moviegoing experience, but ToD came closer.

Wimps. I’ve had Raiders on VCD for over a year.

Funny. That echos what I was saying to my wife tonight.

I’m not going to waste my money on Doom. I would NEVER watch it.

Nope I like Temple over LC as well. I don’t think I have seen Last Crusade more then 3-4 times, if that. Never seemed to be all that exciting.

My understanding is that they will not be selling the movies seperately. All or nothing

If this was not a Spielberg film I would agree. But as noted above Spielberg has a long-standing policy of not doing commentaries. No particular reason to think he will change his mind for these movies.

“Raiders is obviously the best of the three, but I guess I’m the odd man out for thinking that Temple of Doom (even with its clunky dialogue and horrible female sidekick) is a better movie than the godawful mess that is Last Crusade (even including the Connery casting coup).”
It is interesting how opinions of the three films vary. IMO Temple is awful, Raiders good but Crusade is the best of the three and one of the best action-adventure films I have ever seen.

I would consider buying a Crusade DVD for about 20 dollars but Raiders is more of a rental for me so I probably won’t buy the set.

Wait, Raiders was set before ToD??? How did I not notice this? Is it alluded to (or even blatently stated) in ToD?

Forgive me as I have not seen either film in a while and have yet to pick up the DVD.

No, ToD is set before Raiders.

Bit of a sidebar:

A friend of mine preordered through Amazon this boxed set.

He received it ( sans box) about three weeks ago ( before release date) in basic plastic jewel cases from somewhere in Taiwan ( I think, I forget). It was postmarked overseas and I don’t recall what the return address was: business or what.

Everything played fine, he just doesn’t have the boxed set. I’m thinking he got a pirated copy somehow.

anyone else encounter this?
