The BBC would seem like a likely early sign-up – they’re very keen on exploring alternative means of delivering ther products, just now.
For what it’s worth, I was at a seminar today where the Apple rep said he was disappointed with this latest product announcement. See, he knows what else they’re working on
I read this article, which implied that the new iPod won’t allow you to fast forward or rewind through video. Can anyone confirm this? If it’s true, what is the rationale behind it?
Just adding my voice to the chorus here. I’m a relatively impoverished college student (albeit one of those music dorks who buys albums like crack cocaine), and yet my 20-gig iPod, purchased about a year ago, has been feeling cramped for months. It’s just great to have your entire music collection at your fingertips… as cainxinth noted, you never know when you’ll suddenly be in the mood for that song you haven’t listened to in years.
I think you can use the wheel to adjust the position in the video you’re watching; you just won’t get the visual feedback of where you’re moving the playhead.
As for the iPod video itself, the more I think about it, the more I think it’s a stealth product. There isn’t that much demand for watching video on a 2.5" screen; the real blockbuster announcement this week was Apple’s deal with ABC/Disney to sell ad-free programming for $2. This is all about breaking out of the traditional models of network programming and syndication packages, and dragging movie studios along…
I can confirm that it fast forwards, rewinds, and scrubs through the video. My iPod engineer spouse just brought one over here and proved it to me. So yes, it does all of the above.
Put me down as someone that likes the nano and can’t understand the video ipod.
The whole point of the ipod is that it is a background phenomenon: it’s tiny and lets you be connected to information and audio in a way that harkens back to old-time radio programs. Video is a front and center activity: you can’t drive while watching it, you can’t really watch on the go, you can’t do much else but watch it. If I want to sit and watch tv… I have a Tv (with Tivo if need be). Or, better yet, a computer. Makes so much more sense. So the video thing just seems like a waste.
It’s an extra, just like the calendar and the stopwatch features are.
I think the video iPod is just a feint for Apple to have their iTunes Music Store sell videos, myself. Notice that that announcement was the climax of the special event last week…
I do sense a law of diminishing returns here. Too much compression, too small an image. Who WANTS to watch t.v. on such an astonishingly small screen? I, myself, have had to watch stuff for years through a 1 inch diagonal b&w viewfinder and lemmetellya, it sucks wind.
