New Jersey & Bruce Springsteen are closely tied together. What other pairings are as tight?

Two for The Mamas & the Papas: Greenwich Village (specifically the Night Owl Cafe) & Southern California.

Though they’re not from and never lived anywhere near Boston.

For Boston, there’s also the Pixies, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and lots of other not-quite megasuperstars. Arlo Guthrie is western Mass, and James Taylor is really the Vineyard, right?

It’s kind of a problem with places like New Orleans or Kingston, Jamaica, or Chicago (Blues version) where there’s a whole style associated with the place, and it’s hard to pick one particular band (other than Bob Marley and the Wailers).

And the inverse: Nashville, Los Angles and London are where people go to make music, and it’s hard to identify someone uniquely from there. I mean, any commercial country musician is sort of associated with Nashville, but ‘the Nashville sound’ doesn’t really have anything to do with the city itself, and there’s nobody I can think of who is really seen as being from there and representing there.

Though East L.A. is Los Lobos of course.

Vermont: Phish
Georgia/Florida Panhandle: Allman Brothers Band
NYC: besides the Ramones, there’s maybe the Beastie Boys and a bunch of hip-hop and rappers.
Do Rhode Island (or at least RISD) and NYC split the Talking Heads?
