The story in my paper kept going on and on and on about the seatbelt thing…like they were sitting outside the operating room just waiting to give the unconscious man this paltry ticket. Now I am a huge seatbelt believer, but this was the wrong thing to harp on when the man isn’t even out of the operating room yet. And they didn’t even bother to mention the condition of the trooper, except in the last few sentences where he said something about the governor not always taking kindly to being reminded to buckle up.
I don’t see why Corzine shouldn’t be mocked and raked over the coals just like any other public figure, unless physical agony and being in critical condition qualify one for sacred cow status. Plenty of other public figures get roasted for problems and peccadilloes, including accidents, related to underlying psychological/emotional/mental conditions, albeit frequently compounded by poor judgement, breaking the law, and so forth.
And if the criticism of Corzine exemplifies a lack of tact, empathy or class, it does boast a certain social utility: publicizing the value of wearing your damned seatbelt already, and stigmatizing those who refuse to use them as fools.
Besides, it’s the law in NJ and the guv broke it. I say screw him (and his femur bones). Governor Corzine could become to seatbelts what Richard Pryor was to speedballs… Cautionary Tale #1!
Just shows you the lengths people will go not to have to talk to Don Imus. I might knaw off my own foot.
But seriourly, I wish him well. Though for god sake he should have know better. This is New Jersey!
YES IT WAS HORRIBLE! But he’s apologized to the team, lost his TV show and his radio show, what more do you want?[j.k.]
It is very ironic to me that such a complete broohaha over something that totally doesn’t matter by a guy whose words ultimately affect himself and his family and his cottage industry employees seriously injured a guy who really does do things that affect many many lives and yet when you turn on CNN now the story is STILL frigging Imus and Corzine gets mentioned in passing during brief update blips. (Of course what’s particularly ironic to me is that I was channel surfing earlier and one of the news networks had NAPPYGATE as the big story while a crawler at the bottom in little bitty crawler letters said “Car bomb kills at least 40 in Iraq”.
If 40 Americans had been killed by a bomb in Birmingham or Boston or anywhere else… well, the lead story would still be Imus but at least they’d have more updates.
gah, sampiro, that was quite the bit of e.s.p. horrible day in the news today.
haven’t heard a word of imus today. corzine’s update got bumped as well. here in philly, of course there was a wee update. surgery went well, wound cleaned, fluid drained, gov. still very sedated and on vent.
jersey hit hard by nor’eastr and lt. gov. doing well keeping things going.
i’ll bet corzine will now be as militant about seatbelt use as he was against using one before.
