I buy computer monitors occasionally when the ones I own fail, but I can’t remember being in the situation I am currently in. Are any of you familiar with new monitor stink? I just bought a monitor and it is producing an odor I can smell throughout the room. Does this mean my monitor is doomed or will this smell fade? Has anybody experienced this before? I actually used to repair monitors years ago and I don’t remember anything like this.
It is probably just the plastic in the case out-gassing. As monitors are being built to cheaper and cheaper price points the quality of the materials are most likely suffering as well.
I’m betting that is not the plastic, since folk in industrialized countries these days are familiar with the smells of most plastics.
I’m thinking what the OP is referring to is vapors created by outgassing from the epoxy resin in the printed circuit cards. As the circuit boards are warmed by the electronic components that are mounted on them, they give off residual “thinner” vapors - because effectively, they are still curing. This is harmless in the quantities given off by just one monitor, and it will stop after a few weeks or months of use.
