I enjoyed it. I’ll watch it again in a few days looking for any clues or inside jokes that I missed.
Seeing the cast again felt very good. I hope they do at least a couple more of these movies. Andy Breckman is the key to providing great scripts that keeps Tony Shaloub involved.
I saw it today. It was fun, except for the suggestion that Monk was suicidal. That was dark.
And it was a nice reminder of a time when a channel like USA actually aired original shows. Since then, many basic cable network schedules are filled with endless reruns, as described in this article from the New York Times (gift link).
I loved Sharona. When they brought in Natalie, I only watched sporadically. Natalie was annoying, but I hated her daughter. Also, the stories got dumbe.
Monk is a detective, who happens to have a quirk, he solves real mysteries. The Police are competent but not up to his level of brilliance. It is a detective mystery show.
A quirky detective, with a quirk, does quirky things, some sorta mysteries are involved. The police are a cross between the Three Stooges and Inspector Clouseau. This is a comedy that isnt funny.
The dark theme actually makes a lot sense. TV Monk would drop everything when life overwhelmed him. His refuge was the Trudy murder case. There were scenes with TV Monk obsessively reviewing her file.
This time Trudy’s case was old history and solved. Monk didn’t have it as a lifeline.
Ghost Trudy had to save him.
I did question why Monk saved himself in the ocean. It was a perfect opportunity that would spare his friends the grief from suicide. Leland knew Monk was there to work and that he has the laptop. Leland would have gone scorched earth on that rich guy. Found a way to bust him for murder.
I’m surprised Monk was even more determined to use the pills. That Song about depression and the park scene.
I hope we see Molly in any new movies. Monk needs her support.
I enjoyed the show. It was good to see Monk and the gang again. A little depressing to see how old Ted Levine looked. I also saw the solution pretty early. Although I’m a little embarrassed to admit that my first theory was the same as Randy’s.
I noticed that too - he’s 66 but looked nearly ten years older. Made me wonder if he’s a smoker.
Natalie had always annoyed me on the TV series, but she seemed much more likeable here. I still prefer the Sharona character, though. She had more of an edge to her.
I was confused by how Monk survived the fall. Did he land on the balloon?
I too prefer Natalie over Sharona, mostly because we didn’t start watching until Sharona was gone. Kind of like how I like Mike more than Joel, because I only started watching MST3K in the last few seasons.
The adjusted ruler is perfectly plausible. It is the adjusted bunjee cord that breaks the case. A bunjee cord stretches until it absorbs all of the downward momentum and then (unless it has been stretched beyond its breaking point) begins to draw back to its original shirter/thicker shape. A cord 6 feet longer should still do the job, just starting the deceleration a faction of a second later. It shouldn’t matter unless he is doing an especially risky daredevil trick measuring it to where the maximum extent of the stretching is less than 6 feet from the ground. I’m not a big follower of bunjee jumping, but I’m sure that most of them are designed to stop before the last possible inch above the ground. So it would be like (for a totally made up example) 100 feet of cord that would stretch to 150 feet and stop you 50 feet above the ground.
But this isn’t the first time cases have had solutions that made no physical sense. One that sticks wit me, for instance, is the one with the molten gold being mixed with ink.
The rich guy had it specially manufactured.
I could do it in Cad. Establish the first inch with custom spacing. Cut/paste for the rest of the tape.
Render and Print the output file onto steel tape.
Time consuming and expensive one off product.
I wouldn’t have the engineering knowledge to print 25 ft long steel tape that looks professional and wind it into a Stanley case.
Except that would be a massive red flag to any company. I would be extremely suspicious that someone gave me big money for a prank.
I thought he said that he had the stooge make it, but maybe I’m wrong. But they only had a very short amount of time to make it, and it had to match the one he had.
I thought the billionaire would use his control of the supply chain to make sure that the bungee cord Griffin used was defective. And I really doubt that people plan bungee jumps so that they’re only a few feet above the ground.
Does anyone still use non-British Imperial inches or feet? Or is there any reason anyone would make a tape measure based on the nautical mile instead of the statute mile?
