New NFL extra-point rules

(I imagine there’s already been a thread on this, but my crude search abilities didn’t find it.)

I’m surprised to learn of some interesting changes to NFL extra-point rules:

  • Extra-point kicks will originate at the 15-yard line
  • A missed extra point can be run back for a score by the defense, worth 2 points
  • An extra point play that ends in what would normally be a safety for either team is worth one point

So it’s now possible for a team to finish a game with one point.

The latter two rules have been in use in college football for quite some time. AFAIK, no defending team has ever gotten a one-point safety, let alone finished a game with one point. I have seen at least one instance where the team on OFFENSE managed to score a single extra point on a safety during a PAT attempt.

The NFL needs the rouge.
