New Nvidia cards drop - lots of cool new graphics tech coming down the pipe for PC games!

AMD is going to have to slash their prices a lot to remain remotely competitive with the 970. Maybe you’ll be able to get a 290 or 290x for $250? Also, nVidia is going to launch the 960 by the end of October, which may end up being the best $250ish card you can buy.

Cool thanks. I was planning to order a $250ish card, and this makes me think I should wait for the 960 at least.

Waiting for the 960 might take a while. There are rumors that its release has been delayed until early 2015. At the very least, there’s none of the hype that you usually see in the month or two before a release. My WAG is that the 970 and 980 are still selling out so nVidia sees no reason to undercut their more expensive cards any time soon.

So if you want a card now but don’t want to pay for the GTX 970, you could take advantage of all the price drops on last gen cards which make them a reasonable value (particularly if you don’t mind rebates). If you have a sufficiently beefy power supply, you can get the R9 290 and GTX 770 on sale as low as $250. The R9 280 and GTX760 can be found between $150 and $200.
