New PC game from makers of FTL, "Into the Breach"

Anyone still playing this besides me? I’ve gotten all the pilots but two out of the three secret pilots (who are callbacks to FTL – one Mantis, one Rockman, and one green-energy-alien guy (forget their name)). And all the mechs but the bonus mechs (which are, apparently, mech-versions of some of the most common monsters).

It hasn’t had the sticking power of FTL for me, but I’ll be back at it.

“Zoltan” were the green energy guys.

Looks just like Final Fantasy Tactics with mechs. That’s not a bad thing, FFT was a fantastic game. I’ll probably pick it up in the Summer Sale, whenever that happens (usually around June?).

That is not really very accurate. About the only thing they have in common is turn-based square grids. If you are looking for FFT style stuff, you will probably be disappointed.

Fair enough. It has been 20 years since I actually played FFT, so my memory of it is probably not super detailed.

The unique (in my experience, at least) thing about Into the Breach is that after the computer (monsters) moves, you move, knowing that your actions can change the actions of the computer. For example, the computer moves monster #1 up to a building and sets it to attack the building. Then it’s your move – the monster hasn’t actually attacked the building, but is merely setting up to do so. So if you have the right weapon and are in the right position, you can bump it one tile over, such that its attack is now aimed at another monster (or an empty tile) instead of that building. Or you can just kill it, of course, if you have the right weapon.

And there are tons of variations – freezing monsters, notifications that new monsters are about to emerge from a tile (unless you put something on top of that tile, like another monster or your own robot), water hazards (fatal to some monsters), earthquakes, fire, and lots more.

Which means I’m still finding it enjoyable and not a rehash with every new play through.

I got it over the weekend, and man am I bad at this game. Looking at threads online, there are all these people, like, “Oh, I beat the game on normal difficulty my first playthrough, is this supposed to be hard?” and I wish more than ever I had a giant robot with a mecha-punch power.

But I keep playing, because it’s ridiculously fun. Each turn is like a new puzzle: who goes first? Where can I push someone so they’ll attack their own enemy? Can the first enemy kill the second enemy before the second enemy destroys my building? How much do I screw myself over if I block an enemy from coming out this turn?

I keep dying, and I keep playing. So good.
