First off, let me point out that I’ve been a lifelong Republican and (mostly) practicing Christian (evangelical-style). I even voted for GWB. Twice. :smack:
The last few years, though, have found me growing weary of the two-headed aberration that has been spawned from the ill-advised coupling of Evangelical Christianity with the Republican Party. Politically, I still have little use for liberalism or the Democratic Party; rather, I’ve discovered that my leanings are becoming more and more Libertarian. Religiously, I’m drifting away from evangelical Christianity and toward the emerging church movement. Much of this, I think, is due to the fact that I share a house with a 60-ish man (about my father’s age) who is both a hardcore Republican and gung-ho evangelical Christian (he is the son of a Methodist minister) who clearly believes that “Praise Jesus” = “Go USA #1!” and I’m finding I just really don’t like what I see.
Anyway, I was listening to the 1987 Rush CD “Hold Your Fire”, and one line in the song Second Nature struck me as wonderfully appropriate for today’s Republican Party:
“We fight the fire while we’re feeding the flames!”
