Yes! Agree!
You had me at gratuitous animated nudity. They do remind me a bit of the Cramps. A couple who loved each other very much and wanted to make some crazy music together.
The Linda Lindas have some good songs and they’ve only been around a few years.
This is one of my favorite bands. But I listen to a lot of rock music—how are you defining ‘new’–like only started making music in the last few years, or just ‘new to you’? I think of Massive Wagons as a new band, even though they’ve been around for around 15 years, but I’m old enough to think of 2009 as not very long ago. But they’re still making new music, which I think is excellent.
I should probably mention Ghost at this point, since they’re pretty much my favorite current rock band. They’re from Sweden and play a traditional metal style influenced by early Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Iron Maiden, and King Diamond, with a bit of Swedish pop mixed in (they’ve been described as “putting the ABBA back in Black Sabbath”). The lead singer and principal songwriter, Tobias Forge, portrays a succession of Satanic Antipope type characters called “Papa Emeritus”, with each album ostensibly being a different version of the character, while the rest of the group is a revolving ensemble of “Nameless Ghouls” who wear full-body costumes that conceal their identities, and each of their albums is a loosely constructed rock opera/concept album on such themes as the birth of the Antichrist, the fall of empires, or a global pandemic (which they released in 2018, making them somewhat prophetic).
They’ve got a great sound and lots of catchy songs, and they have a concert movie coming to theaters in a few weeks.
I’m on the fence about Greta. They are pretty fucking good. But they sound so much like Zep that I have to check the feed to see what I’m listening to everytime they come on.
But they are certainly worth a listen. So, I guess I’m leaning on one side of the fence more…
Oh, hush. You love Greta. Admit it.
One of my coworkers is from GVF’s hometown of Frankenmuth, MI. I’ve asked her if she has any inside dirt on them but she refuses to say.
A bit of a hi-jack, but I had to share. I was giving Hubster his meds and he was watching, America’s Got Talent," there was a 10 year old girl in traditional Indian garb ( I think it was Indian and traditional) anyway, she positively shredded a guitar. Better than most of our lead players. Hell, right up there with some greats.
Heh, “putting the ABBA back in Black Sabbath”
Good tune, and the video was fun to watch too. Will have to look into these guys more, thanks.
Everybody says they sound exactly like Zep, but to me the lead singer certainly sounds like Robert Plant, but the music itself sounds more like southern rock. Take ‘Highway Tune’ that @Galactus posted-- it sounds more like a Black Crowes song than a Zep song to me.
And incidentally, Chris Robinson, the lead singer of the Crowes, can do a pretty good Robert Plant impersonation himself (jeez, I can’t believe that collaboration is already 24 years old…).
Castle Rat is a lot of fun. Heavy grooves and a dark Dungeons and Dragons theme.
They even stop their live show with a little storytelling and later live roleplaying action.
IMO, Greta sounds enough like Zeppelin that I can’t take them seriously and I just listen to Zeppelin instead. Will check out a lot of other bands in this thread as I haven’t kept up on rock.
A coworker has recommended King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, who I like, but don’t love.
I’m a huge fan of early Sabbath, and listened to a few Ghost songs. Ehhh, a bit too much “pop” for my tastes. The only song that caught my fancy is Ritual. I love how the crunchy guitars come in unexpectedly at 0:25. That’s headbang’n stuff.
A two-piece band called Earth Tongue from New Zealand makes some pretty heavy music:
Sparks definitely doesn’t qualify as a new band. (They first recorded in 1967.) But their new album, The Girl Is Crying in Her Latte, was released in May 2023 and it’s one of their best. It’s nice to see a band that’s been performing so long able to put out such fresh material.
Ghost kinda has two eras - pre-2017, when the group was completely anonymous and the music was heavier and more metal-focused, and post-2017 after several of the founding members left the group, leaving Tobias Forge as the sole creative member of the band. After that, they went with more of an arena rock sound while dabbling in other styles as well - for example, they’ve recorded three psychedelic songs that were presented as “lost” tracks from a forgotten 1969 incarnation of the band. I like both eras myself, but if the poppier stuff isn’t your thing then their first three albums are what you’ll enjoy.
One of my favorites from their metal era is Year Zero, a song about how the reign of the Antichrist is coming soon and it’s going to suck.
