Suggest me some MUSIC!

That’s right, I need to expand my music collection. I like music, but I’m afraid of trying new things, so I need your help to suggest songs/bands I should check out. Here are some groups I currently enjoy:

ACDC
Aerosmith
Bad Religion
Beatles
Eiffel 65
Led Zeppelin
Muse (well, maybe only their Knights of Cydonia track…so good)
Nirvana
Offspring
Optimus Rhyme (ultra nerdcore…I’m not usually a fan of this genre)
Queen
Queens of the Stone Age
Rolling Stones
Seether
Spoon
Sponge
Rush
Who

Who else should I be listening to?

**The Black Angels ** - First album released in 2006, I believe, but sounds like it could have come out in 68. Psychedelic. Turn on, tune in, drone out.
**The Arcade Fire ** - Neon Bible
**The War On Drugs ** - Wagonwheel Blues
—Both of these albums have a Springsteen-y feel; the War on Drugs have a smattering of Dylan for colour.

**Deadboy and the Elephant Men ** - We Are The Night Sky. Like Leonard Cohen singing AC/DC songs, but way better than that sounds.

Entrance - Grim Reaper Blues.

Mclusky - Mclusky Do Dallas. Riff heavy stadium rock with outstanding and sometimes laugh out loud lyrics. The title of thier second album “The Difference Between Me And You Is That I Am Not On Fire” is a good indication of thier sense of humor.

Wolfmother - Wolfmother
**The Sword ** - Age Of Winters
----------Both bands are very Black Sabbath influenced. Great stoner metal.

**Turpentine Brothers ** - We Dont Care About Your Good Times

If you like any of this, I gots more

Similar music tastes here, so I’ll be watching this thread closely.

I’ve been rocking out a lot to all the incredible **Dream Theater ** music I’ve somehow managed to overlook over the last 15 years.

I see you have Muse there. Spend a little more time on them, try maybe their Origin of Symmetry album. They are fantastic.

Another band I just was introduced to is the Belgian band dEUS. Think of a mix Radiohead meets Talking Heads.

Talking Heads
Kyuss (the band that Queens of the Stone Age used to be)

You must – absolutely must – take a listen to Parliament/Funkadelic

Their live stuff (they allow taping, so it’s easy to find legal, free, and high quality boots) will blister your eardrums from excessive listening.

It’s a bit nuanced, but Parliament leans a bit more to the funk side of things, while Funkadelic leans more toward rock/metal–but they’re all soooooo good. You’ll see lots of incarnations/names out there (e.g., P-Funk All Stars, Funk Mob), but it’s pretty much Label’s legal hassles over names and various incarnations and flavors of the same basic band.

And they’re just your introduction to the wide world of funk.

For junior funkateers, let me introduce you to Betty Davis. No, not the actress, nor the bland “eyes” song. For context: Married to Miles (yes, that’s where the Davis comes from), had an affair (?) with Hendrix, introduced the two of them, and is the inspiration for the electric sound that came to be Bitches Brew. If you think her backstory is interesting, just wait 'till you hear her.

The Misfits; they influenced a lot of 80’s and newer rock bands such as Metallica, Rob Zombie, and Guns and Roses

The Breeders, excellent alternative rock band

Metallica, although I assume you probably already know them

The White Stripes, Jack and Meg White, simple basic loud rock, especially the first couple albums. Sort of like Zeppelin mixed with Nirvana.

The Raconteurs, especially the second album

Boston
Creedence Clearwater Revival

They don’t fit in super great with what you have, but I like them along with some of what you have up there, so I say give it a shot.

Seconded
By the way, have you been to Pandora.com yet? IMHO it’s one of the top, oh, five things that are great about the Internet. Lessee… The Dope, Google, Wiki, Pandora, YouTube. Yeah, top five sounds right.

Here are a few that I’ve recently come to like:

Low vs. Diamond

Ludo - Especially love the lyrics in this one

Flobots

MGMT

Band of Horses

Seconded.

I won’t bother to blast you with an exhaustive list of bands obscure or otherwise, but one look at your list, you should really be spinnin’ some Foo Fighters, post haste.

How stuck are you on rock? There are a lot of other great styles of music out there; folk, bluegrass, rap, blues, reggae, whatever the hell Sufjan Stevens is . . .

I’d heartily agree with this characterization. And yet, I like psychedelic music but didn’t like this band when I saw them live (I saw them for an opening band, The Warlocks, who are like the Black Angels but with more Cure-ish melodies.)

Perhaps if their albums are not all turned up to 11 so that your ears ring too much to actually hear the music being played they might sound good. And I mean that in the best way possible

I have also seen them live, and agree that it wouldn’t be everyone’s bag. I think they’re wonderful.

The Warlocks on the other hand…

The Stone Coyotes - just because.

Dragonforce - so you can master GuitarHero3 on Expert.

The Clash
Social Distortion
Supersuckers
The Raveonettes

Definitely Social Distortion!

Great idea, because you can put in what you know you like and it will find similar styles of music.

I was going to say Wagner, since it’s in a different direction but big and overpowering like some of that rock and/or roll you mentioned.
