New Science Fiction by Caleb Carr

I picked up a book by Caleb Carr in the Waldenbooks this evening. I don’t have it with me and can’t recall the title, but I bought it because I really liked both The Alienist and The Angel of Death and was intrigued by the idea of a story set in the 2020s by him.

Has anyone read it yet, and is it as good as his earlier stuff?

BTW, Killing Time is the title.

Haven’t read it, but I’m intrigued. It’s going on my Christmas list. I have read “The Alienist” and have “The Angel of Death” on my list (It’s actually in my pile to read next).

Have you seen the movie “200 cigarettes?” Caleb Carr has a cameo. He’s the long haired guy at the bar.

“Has anyone read it yet”

It was serialized – not completely, of course – in Time Magazine a few months ago. Intriguing plotline; very dark, very “who do you trust?”. Well written and very descriptive; the words gave a consistent and coherent image of the characters, and you really sensed the ways in which his future world were the same and different.

Just what you’d expect from reading Carr’s excellent earlier period/historical novels, where you got a real feel for the characters and for late Victorian New York City.

Spoiler warning …

I’m only going to read it if it ends with Teddy Roosevelt showing up and saving the day. I’m a big fan of his “TR Ex Machina” style, and I think more writers should adopt it.
