I can only get some sort of slideshow of previously recorded bits. Is that all there is?
I don’t think it’s live at night their time. West coast USA iirc.
The ‘popcorn’ sounds like a dryer running.
True story.
We took our Sheber Sheber to the vet a few years ago. He is quite the do what he wants constantly into stuff lovable terror (but not agressive). And damn good looking.
Anyway, when the vet’s assistance comes out and sees him she exclaims “What a beautiful dog! And a Shiba Inu ! We see lots of them as puppies but very few adults. It will be just a few more minutes and I come back out and get you”.
A lady sitting next to us ask us “Why don’t they see many adult Shibas?”.
Because of our dog’s nature, I jokingly responded “The dogs are so aggravating that many owners have them put down before too long”.
In a very serious tone the lady asked “Oh, really?”
I guess I need to work on my joking friendly sarcasm tone some more…
Is it common for Westerners to call them “Shiba inu”? In Japanese I’ve always heard “Shibaken” or just “Shiba”. AFAIK, “Shiba inu” would be like calling a Dachshund a “Dachs dog” (i.e. technically correct but weird).
It’s the official name in the U.S. per the the American Kennel Club.
In the English language, it’s not uncommon to have the suffix “dog” in a breed’s name; German Shepherd Dog (in the US), Portuguese Water Dog, Bernese Mountain Dog, American Eskimo Dog, Australian Cattle Dog, and so on. Sometimes the suffix is in the language of the breed’s country of origin, for example the Argentine Dogo, or the various -hunds (hund is German and Swedish for “dog”).
Why, in English, some breeds are referred to by an English name, while others use the the name used in the county of origin, I don’t know. It’s a similar situation as for foreign place names (e.g. We call France “France” and not “Frenchland”, but use “Spain” for España and OMG WE INFERIOR ROUNDEYE USE “JAPAN” FOR THE GLORIOUS AND SUPERIOR NATION OF NIPPON-KOKU! NEED MOAR SUPERIOR ANIME AND J-POP PLS! JAPANESE CELL PHONE TECHNOLOGY IS FIVE YEARS AHEAD OF AMERICAN TECHNOLOGY. WHY DON’T I HAVE A GIRLFRIEND?).
I was on board with the cuteness, but then the mother started feeding them. Ewww!!
Something got your tities in a twist?
Mom’s not snuggling the babies now. Aren’t moms supposed to snuggle their babies at all times?
Also, I did wonder–do mom dogs ever get tired of just hanging out with their babies? Do they ever want to go play ball or have a walk, or are they cool with just watching the babies all the time?
That’s what I’m saying. “Shibaken” already means “Shiba dog”, with “ken” being like a suffix meaning “dog”. If English-speakers called it a “Shiba dog” or “Shiba ken”, that would be consistent and unremarkable. I’m just trying to figure out how “Shiba inu” came to be used in English.
Climb down from the ledge, it was just a question. Jeez. What a turd.
Well, “inu” also means dog: Shiba Inu: brushwood* dog. It’s not like we say “Shibaken Inu.” From what I understand, the kanji character 犬 can be spoken either “inu” or “ken.” I suspect that the difference in saying “Shiba Inu” rather than “Shibaken” comes from different, localized dialects in Japan, with one catching on in America and the other catching on in Japan.
Anyway, most of us Shiba owners drop the “inu” part in daily speech.
*: Shiba can also mean “little”

I’ve got the flyer about the Shiba for sale, if anyone is interested. PM me for details.
They always seem to be either sleeping or nursing when I check 'em. I mean I -know- being that adorable is pretty tiring work, but really, when do they start doing puppy-run-around things?
I’m with you. So far they have always been sleeping.
Maybe they’re not sleeping now!

Nope, still sleepin’…
Maybe now!

Still sleepin’…
Cute as a buncha buttons, but still sleepin’.
Epic levels of cuteness!
My mom’s tenants have 2 Shibas. They had dreams of breeding them but the boy had some sort of…difficulty when it came to coupling and the girl liked to escape the fence and go on walkabouts. The area is very rural with lots of intact males of the non-Shiba variety running around, so they decided to just get them both fixed. We had so wanted to get a puppy from them too.
They’re opening their eyes now! Plus, little soft toys have been added to their den area. Too cute!
They’re so big! How did they get so big in week? And yeah, what’s up with all the sleeping? I want to see some clumsy, fat-legged hijinx, pronto! Dance, puppies! Dance!
