How could unhooking the plumbing for a sink and putting it back later even remotely cost $1000? It’s one of the simplest plumbing jobs there is. Everything is hand-tight plastic drain lines, right? Even if they are broken and you need new ones it is like $20. If you were anywhere near Cleveland I would drive over there and do it for you if you are not handy.
Do you have any good photos of this you can link to?
Drad Dog, a little more specificity here would be really helpful.
How do you know you have a $1000 plumbing job on your hands? That makes no sense for reasons others have elucidated. Did you get a quote from someone? Are you guessing? Is “$1000 plumbing job” an offhand thing your handyman said?
Home Depot is filing an insurance claim? Well, I’m sure they are. But against whose insurance? And why?
Since you contracted with HD to do this work, they’re on the hook—they have to either make it right or determine that their warranty doesn’t apply for some (valid) reason. “Filing an insurance claim” has to do with how they handle the expense of fixing it—and that’s outside the scope of your problem.
Since you’re describing things vaguely and leaving out important details with us, you’re probably doing the same with the stone company and Home Depot. We can be more helpful if you’re clearer and you include all the relevant details—but providing a clear and comprehensive account of all this will yield better results from Home Depot and their subcontractors as well.
I have been trying to provide details as asked for and in real time.
When a stone company installs a sink they may claim they want you to be responsible for all the plumbing and liability associated.
So that means they refuse to look at the sink at all unless it is cleared of faucets, and the disposal.
It also means every service call about a bad sink must be preceded by a plumber stripping the stuff so they can work, and then another call afterwards, making your sink actually work. Two plumber visits.
I just paid $265 for them to come and prep the area for the sink reinstall. They will come back after the sink is in place. That was quoted to me at $435. A $700 job so far.
But after in person viewing and explanations, the plumber prepping the area said there are things that need to be done not in their quote.
So i say $1000 for now. My habitual style of thinking now is called “catastrophic” I mean it’s 100 degrees outside. My AC is waiting for a service call, and I got no water in the kitchen.
I got a call from HD national HQ today, saturday. They are referring it to a regional office. So there is hope. It is easier to tell people to get tough than to be there and have these people say “no.” I mean what am I going to do? I actually told people to not buy their product in front of them. That’s pretty extreme.
You’re right about the ins claim. It’s not for me. It is to protect them because they know something is up. That’s also why they called me today I presume.
The part of your post I am most interested in is the relationship of HD to me, and to the stone co. It’s Chinatown. It’s a black hole. The paperwork is HD. But they keep telling me that stone co warranty is good and we have no comment.
It is a big company and many of these people are functionaries. Lets’ see what the national office does.
They do not want to work with a company who does that to people, no matter what some functionary says today.
Way to blame the victim, man! Well played. :dubious: You just became my mother for a second.
I think of this as a tornado of obfuscation going in one direction, from 2 or 3 large business entities, and being fielded by one human person who is trying to expose the actuality of it to the light.
The fact that they refuse to make a call until you agree to hire a plumber and take the sink apart means they obviously don’t take your call seriously.
Because it seems like they would want to know 1) if it was their fault. And 2) if it’s going to fail presently. Two big things IMO.
It’s passive aggressive thing for a business to do. And it might mean they know you have a voided warranty already, but are not saying it out loud. This is not doing a favor to the customer to say the least.
BTW the woman on the phone telling meto hire the plumber mentioned “garbage disposal” as needing to be removed. The GD is a warranty voider. Why did she say that and not mention it?
Well it was reinstalled. The workers had to rout into the wood to make it happen. That means the original installation was inadequate. I told him to tell the boss that he agrees with me. (They had just left the clips without the ability to turn and support the sink.)
