warning if ya dont like spiders …
I’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t speak with an Aussie accent.
i think they should name the species after the spider goddess of the dark elves in dungeons and dragons lolth
This article reads as only a slight improvement on yellow journalism.
Let’s review: they found an example of this spider in 2012, and JUST NOW (9 years later) found a second specimen. So, two spiders in about a decade. Yeah, I’m not going to worry about the imminent evil spider infestation just yet.
Also, they are pretty sure this species is already endangered. And, while it potentially has the ability to sting a human about like a bee, there are zero reports of this happening.
It’s also apparently scary because it has a long lifespan - decades, they say. By that measure, my cats are scary too.
Yeah. You are so right.
Now that funnelweb spider downunder? That is a scary spider. Not only a bite like a black widow but aggressive too.
This is no big deal, spider-wise.
I tried to write a follow-up post quoting this, and something weird happened, so I’m not sure if I’m going to double-post here. However, I do need to correct myself. The first specimen was found in 2012 and a second one about 2 years later, according to the article. Apparently nothing since, or at any rate the article doesn’t mention it.
Seems like the real story here may be that the spider’s habitat is disappearing, not that the spider is “terrifying.”
Some people are afraid of spiders and I can easily see how trapdoor spiders could be terrifying to some of them. This is sad for them because spiders are actually very cool critters.
I was once able to train a funnel-web spider to come out hoping for dinner when I got home from work, but I wasn’t able to teach her to swim and she drowned during the last good monsoon we’ve had here.
Okay, I’ll be the one…I’m terrified of that fucking thing! I had to read the article just to make sure it wasn’t close enough to get me.
That’s only natural for a beetle.
Once I found out spiders eat bugs that freak me out even more, I leave them alone. Go. Do your good work, spiders of the world!
Those who fear when a spider crawls, rolls shit in little balls.
:flees:
Those who resemble eight-legged IT
May eat my little balls of shit!
Yeah, I was just thinking: You know what we really need? A new species of spider.
Great. So now there are about 45,000 + 1 known species of spiders.
I always think about this item when I see stories about spiders… https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article5400985.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/O3mjNTx.png
