LonesomePolecat, Spam is much more popular among Asian-Americans than the general population. Hawaii consumes more Spam than any other state.
Sorry, but it’s not Asian-Americans. It’s South Pacific Islanders who seem to have a cultural taste for Spam. Even the Perfect Master speaks of it.
I consider South Pacific islanders to be Asian.
They’re definitely not. Different language group, different culture, even distinctively different appearance (although there’s a very wide range of South Pacific Island appearances). It’s no more or less accurate than to consider them Americans (which a number of them are, off the top of my head American Samoa, the Phillipines, and maybe Guam?).
Talk to the people at the U.S. Census, then, because in the 1990 and 2000 censuses, there was an ethnic category “Asians and Pacific Islanders”.
If they’d considered Pacific Islanders to be Asian, why would they have specified both?
That being said, this is a silly argument. If you want to consider Pacific Islanders Asians, go right ahead. It’s not likely to offend anyone except possibly the Pacific Islanders, and something tells me you don’t meet a lot of them anyway.
