New style Nigerian scam?

Yesterday three Africans were arrested trying to scam a hotel here. See this web site for more details (sorry me no understand how to link, mods can you fix?)

The News this morning gave more detail - a business man tipped off the police and now the police want to hear from anyone who may have had dealings with these guys. They said, no matter how embarrassed you may be, you may have thought you were in to make a lot of money, please come forward.
This led me to believe that it is a ‘new’? way for the Nigerian scammers to work. They are now coming to you, you don’t have to go to them! Are they able to now travel and get possibly dodgy passports because they can use the previously scammed money?
These guys are really pissing me off - but so too are the greedy idiots who fall for it.
Has anyone else heard of these possibly new developments?

Good or good-looking-but-phoney bills on the outside & newspaper on the in- is not a new scam.

But I do think that Nigeria is earning a reputation that shall harm its people in the long run. :frowning:

I’ve been to Nigeria. You can’t harm its reputation.

Where is Nigeria mentioned in the news story?

I must be missing it somewhere.

My brother in law worked in Nigeria for about a decade. His stories indicate that the Nigerian scammers are probably the country’s best and brightest.

That’s why I’m asking the question. Is it the Nigerian scammers? I was lead to believe it could be because the police have asked people to come forward even if they are embarrassed and thought they would be making a large amount of money (this is not in the newspaper article it was on the morning news that I listened to). Also, the guys were all Africans - many of the “Nigerian” scammers are not Nigerian.

It looks more like a “Spanish Prisoner” scam than a Nigerian style scam. Varients of the Spanish Prisoner go back for centuries.
