New Trends in Fundraising

Apparently the new trend is to simply emulate begging. I’m accustomed to kids selling magazine subscriptions or wrapping paper or cookies or popcorn or car washes. But the last few months I’ve seen kids just standing on the side of the road asking for straight-up donations to pay for field trips, etc.

I don’t know why I find it any more obnoxious than overpriced chocolate bars, but I think it’s kind of pathetic.

I confess that I’d be extremely skeptical that they’re engaging in an official fundraiser.

Ugh, I freaking hate this. Around here, they post kids from a pee-wee football team or something in the median divider of the street, so they’re right outside your window when you stop at the light.

It’s a really fucking stupid place to put kids, if you ask me. You want new uniforms? Fine. Mow a lawn.

Seconded.

There’s this whole underground of teens and young adults being moved around from town to town selling overpriced magazine subscriptions–where said subscriptions often don’t actually exist. (My wife unfortunately fell for this once–she paid like thirty five dollars, and ended up receiving a single out-of-date issue.)

Maybe something like that is what you were seeing?
