I’ve got my eye on this TV I think I may want. It’s a Sylvania, with a VCR and DVD player in one. Someone told me that if one component breaks (like the VCR) then the whole TV goes down. Is this true?
Also, what does it mean that the TV “plays MP3s”? I know nothing about MP3s- no laughing! How does that feature work?
Any help would be appreciated here.
I had a TV/VCR unit and the VCR jammed on the “play” mode. Since that overrode the tuner, it meant I couldn’t use the TV, either. I now have a cheap DVD player plugged into a cheap VCR which is plugged into a 1980s era TV (click tuner, no remote) and it’s working quite well for me. Based on my experience, I’d go with separate components.
MP3’s are compressed audio files. Most new CD and DVD players will play MP3 formatted CD’s, so it’s nothing particularly special, unless you’re feeding the audio signal through a much better sound system than a TV has.
i’d second the separate components argument. If the dvd player breaks and you have to take it in, you don’t have a television until they get it fixed.
As for the MP3 thing, MP3’s are a popular format for compressed audio files that you can write to CDs and listen to them with the dvd player. Not all too useful if you don’t have a computer and a CD-RW. Your original CDs will sound better, but the benefit of MP3 is you can fit many albums on a CDRW.
Unless you’re really squeezed for space, you’re better off with a $50 DVD player and a $50 VCR plugged into a TV. The $50 components will be of the same caliber of what’s in the integrated TV, and when one of 'em breaks at warranty + one day, you’re just out $50 and not the whole unit.
