The Union Shield was use on the Indian Head penny between 1860 and 1909. It was slightly more round than the new design. The new design can be found on several Civil War Tokens that were minted locally during the war though.
Last year’s designs were not a search to find a new design, but to commemorate the 200th birthday of Lincoln. The four designs were to honor his life. The new design in the final design, until the next change, which will probably be in 50 years, which is the current cycle of the penny since Lincoln replaced the Indian Head.
It’s not as good as the old one with the Lincoln Memorial design that we all grew up with, but it’s a helluva lot better than that “ONE CENT” with the wheat penny that was around in earlier times. This new one is nice but I just prefer the penny I am familiar with.
I love the ‘Union Shield’ penny (or properly called the one-cent coin) Its the best new design to date. I began saving ‘Wheat pennies’ since 1970. After seeing what some of the rarer coins go for these days Ill be going through them with my 10 power. Wish me luck, lol
Is anyone else slightly offended (or at least confused) that the OP felt it was necessary to inform us that the penny is a one-cent coin in parenthesis? Just me huh? Must be the sleepiness kicking in.
How long until they phase out the penny completely? It is becoming an almost unnecessary piece of coinage. Not to mention getting more and more difficult to manufacture for less than than its face value.
First change for the penny, but they’ve changed the bills however many times, from little face in the circle, to big face in the circle, to big face outside the circle; they changed the nickel from Jefferson profile with Montecello on the back, to those 2004 “Lewis and Clark” commemorations on the back, and now it’s something like Jefferson in 3/4, with Montecello on the back again; they’ve been doing all those state quarters; they had the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin, and then the gold Sacagawea dollars, and now the presidential ones.
They keep changing the money around, and it’s annoying.
Great idea! Let’s just do away with any numbers to the right of the decimal! That would make it easier for everyone, right? In fact, let’s only count by tens. We don’t need single digit numbers anymore, they’re almost unnecessary in this day and age, right? Right??
