New Windows 10 laptop crashes when plugging in USB

Hi all, I got a new Dell Latitude laptop a few days ago and it crashes when I plug in the USB to try and install my printer. It takes a reset to get it working again as no amount of rebooting will. I thought the first time was an anomaly, but no. I really like the laptop otherwise and I don’t want to go through the hassle of returning or sending it off for repair if it’s a somewhat easy software fix. Any thoughts? I checked the hardware with the diagnostics when I pushed F12 during booting and everything was fine.

I’ll be gone for the rest of the day and will leave it on in case I’m being impatient and it will fix itself (yeah, right) and will check for any replies then. THANK YOU.

Test the USB ports with other devices such as a thumb drive, link to a smartphone, and any other device you might have. If other devices crash, you might have the wrong driver installed for the USB chipset.

If everything else works, try installing the base driver for the printer manually before plugging it in.

What do you mean by “plug in the USB”? Are you connecting a USB memory stick with the printer drivers? Are you connecting a USB cable that the printer is attached to? If so, try another memory stick or another USB cable, and try a different port on the computer.

So the computer crashes as soon as you plug the USB cable (already connected to the printer, I assume) into the laptop’s USB port?

Did the printer work OK with your old computer?

Have you tried other USB ports on the laptop? Same result?

Only thing that comes to mind is to go to Device Manager, delete the entry for the printer (or the “unknown device”), if there is one, and try again.

The only reason I’ve seen for that symptom is a defective USB port. Hardware.

Bad software wouldn’t result in a crash, the device simply wouldn’t work.

All USB crashing probable hardware issue and need to return. If just printer cable try printer cable try another cable.

It’s when I plug the USB cable connected to my printer into the USB port. The printer is fine with my old laptop. It also crashes my USB mouse, so maybe it’s something with the USB driver or…? The mouse works fine on every USB port UNTIL I plug in the printer.

Thanks for the replies! I just got home and will fuss with it a little more tonight.

After messing with it some more I’ve decided to return it. I really like the laptop and it was the last one at a great price! But it’s money wasted if it doesn’t work right.

Thank you, everyone.
