We’ve already discussed various ideas for what form the World Trade Center memorial should take - here, for instance - and I’d been leaning to the “build 'em again only bigger” side. But in a recent issue of Time magazine, someone wrote in with what I think would be the perfect idea for what to do with the site. I’m not sure it could ever actually be done, since a lot of people wouldn’t get it and might even think it was disrespectful, but I think it could be really great.
A baseball park.
It’d send the perfect message to Bin Laden: you have not broken us, we’re going to carry on with our lives and not cower in fear. We’ll make good memories on that site to replace the bad ones. Baseball is so much a part of the American mythology, and of New York - the one time I flew into New York the thing that struck me was that it seemed like there was a ballpark on every other block. Ideally, I think, it wouldn’t be a major league park - perhaps a Mets/Yankees game every September 11, with proceeds going to victims of international terrorism - but otherwise it’d be open to the public, maybe some little league games held there.
So what do y’all think?
