This change has finally spurred me to get Gmail. Fuck this format, fuck Yahoo
The only reason I continue to use Yahoo instead of Gmail is that I’m paranoid about one company having too much information. Google already has all my searches, which is a tremendous amount of private information.
Also I imagine it would be a pain in the ass to switch, when everyone I know and every website I’ve registered with have my Yahoo address. COuld I have email automatically forwarded to a from Yahoo to a Gmail account?
I moderate several yahoo!groups, and they managed to completly break the “database” or tables.
Several groups I’m on have gone suddenly silent, which makes me think yahoo has managed to reset memberships to prohibit people from posting. It’s a mess. Does anyone know if yahoo is trying to kill mail and groups so they can focus on other things? Like how banks want to get rid of small customers?
You can avoid a lot of spam by subscribing to Yahoo premium and using disposable email addresses. You setup a base name like ‘biteme69’. Then to create disposable addresses, you just add a hyphen and something to identify the purpose of that address. So if you’re using it for Amazon, it might look like [EMAIL=“biteme69-amazon@yahoo.com”]biteme69-amazon@yahoo.com.
Then if you start getting spam from this address, you can just delete it.
The problem is that if you try to send mail using a disposable address, it shows your true yahoo address in the header as well as the disposable one, so it’s really only useful for receiving mail, not sending.
The other problem is finding where they’ve hidden disposable addresses in the new format. You have to go to settings (just like you did if you went back to basic email) and then security. To add an address, you have to scroll all the way to the bottom. In my case, since I have a couple hundred disposable addresses, it a bit of a PITA.
The current cost of Yahoo mail plus is about $20/year - here is their description of the service.
Watch out: AFAICT, a lot of the annoying changes in the new Yahoo were designed to imitate features of Gmail.
I have one Gmail account and one Yahoo account, and I don’t particularly like the user interface in either of them.
The problem is that Yahoo interprets the word ‘feature’ the same way Jackson Pollock interpreted the word ‘art.’
Agreed! I don’t know if you use groups, but they did an even more heinous change to the Groups feature. I’ve noticed for years that each “update” of Yahoo mail was worse than the one before. Same with groups, they keep getting uglier and with worse features (or worse accessibility to features) than the one before.
Yes. Yes, it is. And whoever designed the new interface is at least as bad as Hitler.
I hate yahoo, but I’ve had it for so long that I don’t want to go through all the trouble of changing. Plus because it’s extra sucky, you can’t set up forwarding and stuff without paying.
I do like the changes this time. I mean, I HATE HATE HATE the thread thing, but it was easy enough to turn off. But the last version did not play well with either my firefox, os, or my add-ons, or some unholy combination of them all. Now I can actually read an entire message without resizing my window.
I don’t like how the “send” button is down at the bottom and can disappear. I like being able to hit send without having to scroll.
It seems to have taken a dump on my Firefox as well, as far as I know, its completely up to date too. I mean, my computer is sort of a piece, but its got 4 gigs of ram… I mean damn.
I also have noticed if I have my inbox open and get an email, it won’t show up, no matter how many times I refresh, until I go into another folder, refresh there, and then go back into my inbox.
Also, as soon as the update happened, my account got hacked, and it sent boner pill advertisements to my grandmother, which I hate. Also, it sent out “Obama is a gay Hitler blah blah blah” crap too. LAME!
I preferred the “Classic” variety, it seemed to do better.
Every new version of Yahoo mail is worse than the last. Like others, I only keep Yahoo mail because I’ve had the same email address so long. This new version might be my limit. It is incoherent and buggy.
True, but those seem to be the only sorts of relationships I can maintain. :smack:
Or at least they are the ones that are memorable.
Is hotmail still around? :smack:
I get those, too! Is yours horny local sluts want to meet you?
Hotmail got changed about a year ago to outlook. I like it a lot better than Gmail now. I was even and to snag my first and last name, so that’s the email address I use for professional things.
People still use Yahoo as their main email? Huh.
Cute. You can stick it up your arse, too, huh.
Indeed. Why do so many tech-snobs act like using Yahoo mail is some kind of sign that you are mere hoi-poloi in the computer world? I use my Yahoo mail account because I got it a long time ago. Gmail? The one all the ‘elite’ folks use? That started in 2004. 2004! I had been in the internet for 10 years and was already way sick of changing email addresses with ISP providers, I was not about to do that again. Now a bunch of little pricks come along and tell me the brownstone I live in and invested in is soooo old looking and I should come and buy a McMansion.
I have a hotmail account. I don’t use it except as a junk mail account because I didn’t like the interface. I also have a Gmail account because my droid phone forced me to get one . Yeah. I do not use it except when this droid phone requires me to.
Okay, fuck yahoo.
Actually, I’ve been saying that for several years already. EVERY upgrade they’ve done to their e-mail service for the last several years has been worse than the one before, In My Insignificant Opinion, for my purposes (which is simply, you know, to send and receive plain-text e-mails with occasional attached files). I 90% gave up on Y e-mail a couple years ago. I still use it only for one account where I send a lot of attachments, and that’s only because gmail deals with attached files even worse.
But the latest changes really really don’t work, at least with the computers, browsers, and versions that I use here. When I saw what they’ve done, just yesterday, my thought was: They really need to do some massive major debugging here.
ETA: And lately, Yahoo News has gotten unusable too, so I’ve largely given up on that as well.
