There’s a competing ruling from earlier this week that’s the exact opposite so the issue is far from settled. Presumably the losing sides in each case will appeal.

Note that the New York Supreme Court is the lower trial-court level in New York. The highest court in the state is the New York Court of Appeals.

That confused me at first, especially when the article I read mentioned only the one judge. Still, it’s a good sign; I hope it’s upheld all the way through the Court of Appeals.
