Ahh…is someone is a little cranky because Boris Johnson won’t let you basement dwelling chavs play his reindeer games?
I think you’re trying to be funny, which makes me embarrassed for you.
My statement didn’t make any claim about them being unjust, and in fact I made no value judgement about them at all.
In this context ‘privilege’ is almost exclusively things that are not earned, but not as a value judgment.
An economically disadvantaged person with dark skin may be able-bodied, and that able-bodiedness is a type of privilege. There is no reason for a person to feel guilt about being able-bodied; but an able-bodied person will have a hard time seeing bias or discrimination that impacts those who are not.
‘check your privilege’ is something that is said to someone who is making assumptions based on something that they are unlikely to know about, it is not a statement of malfeasance or intent. It is pointing out ignorance, and we are all ignorant about most topics in the world despite the word ignorant being used as a pejorative term some times.
Yeah that’s right, so remind me how allowing get out clauses for people like Jeong is going to promote a healthy discourse in the future?
Yeah, so again, how is insulting the very people you want to change with insults like ‘White tears’ ‘White fragility’ going to endear any average white person to your righteous cause?
So are you going to forgive Quinn Norton? Are you going to forgive the Netflix communications chief, who was ‘On your side’ ??
“Dumbass fucking White people marking up the internet with their opinions like dogs pissing on fire hydrants” -Sarah Jeong
“I am perfectly safe and I can handle it. If I cannot handle it, it’s on me to build my racial stamina”- Dr Robin De Angelo
I can’t find any sources that show her statement of apology. Can you link to some?
She didn’t issue an apology and I’m inclined to believe you knew that, hence why you asked it even though I never said she did make one. But she did weigh in on the drama with Sarah Jeong -
So if anything, NYT owes her an apology for doing to her what they refused to do with Jeong, not standing by her and firing her for making ‘Out of context’ Tweets.
To expand on that.
White guys who ignore their privilege are the ones that find themselves resented. Us white men also tend to respond poorly because we are afraid that people will laugh at us, so the typical response is to over-react like Delicious did.
It comes across as both ignorant and condescending when people do this because it is hand waving away the hard-earned subject matter knowledge that these minorities have.
Minorities are far more knowledgeable about discrimination than the typical white male because they experience it, and privilege is pretty damn hard to see on it’s own and it is almost impossible to notice out of thin air when our society try to re-enforce this “you are special and earned everything” bullshit.
I grew up poor, but I also was born to white parents and parents who valued education and could spend time with their children. I am in no way ashamed by this fact but the fact is that this helped set me up for success better than someone who wasn’t as lucky.
The only time ‘shame’ or ‘self hate’ comes into this is if you are ignorant of those facts and overly sensitive to some myth that you did everything on your own. This doesn’t say anything about how hard I worked, about the sacrifices I made to get where I am or any other type of judgement about my actions.
The shame comes from ignoring the systemic problems that limit others based on their color of skin, or by dismissing the fact that others have other barriers which actually makes it harder to get to that point.
If we could wave a wand and make everyone understand that these are not personal attacks we would be most of the way to fixing several problems like sexism and racism.
While I know it can be frustrating to be the butt of a joke, the reason white men are the butt of the joke here is because we refuse to do this. This is re-enforced daily in white culture and not out of explicit racism but out of cowardliness.
The belief that we “earned” everything we have is the ONLY reason some individuals think movements like black lives matter seem to attack white people. Because we have this myth that we are somehow special snowflakes who got where we did all on our very own…when we have benefited from a system that has thrown our fellow citizens under the bus.
The vitriol that has been targeted at me in this thread is a perfect example of this. And unless you think that white men are so inferior as to being unable to compete in a more equal society there is nothing to fear about it.
The juvenile response that is ‘white fragility’ is the problem for most people, as most people want to be good.
BLM is almost exclusively about equality, feminism is almost exclusively about equality. Sure you can go and cherry pick some extreme cases but the reality is that because us white males are ignorant about these topics, yet are taught that we some how have to be ‘self made’ to value ourselves we react poorly.
Just don’t fucking believe the lie that your value is attached to being ‘self made’ or that you didn’t benefit from systemic bias. That doesn’t devalue you or your your personal hard work one bit.
You have every right to be proud of your hard work, but why not be proud of your efforts vs hiding behind the myth that you have to be handed things to be successful.
By buying the typical bullshit you are being ungrateful to your parents and community while also taking credit for the handouts that systemic racism provided you.
I am betting even without those handouts you would have been a good person, and the fact that due to no choice of your own you got handouts doesn’t impact who you are.
But being willing to ignore our shout down the hard work and challenges others do face makes you like a petty coward. The shame you should have is in choosing to stay a coward if you understand that.
This has been pasted several times, you may not have accepted it but you are spreading untruths there.
paper’s statement
And her apology
White males like to be forgiven when they acknowledge they did something wrong and apologized for it. It seems it would promote healthy discourse if we extended that same privileged to minorities.
Why do you think that not forgiving minorities for what they have apologized for will help with the discourse?
The oppressed have tried to win their freedom by complimenting their oppressors throughout history, and it has never worked.
And that you find white fragility to be an insult, rather than an objective description of exactly your sort of reaction in the face of any sort of uncomfortable subject is part of the problem. That you decide to be insulted by things that you have to decide to be insulted by is a great indication of white fragility.
I didn’t know that actually, since normally I really don’t care who private corporations hire and fire.
But do you think her lack of apology makes her situation a little different?
The burden of proof is on the person making the claim. There’s been a claim that Jeong was unapologetic. That’s been falsified. There’s been a claim that she’s racist. No admissible piece of evidence has been offered - just tweets removed from context. Your move.
The fact that none of her critics have bothered to present a single real substantiated example is telling. Some of them (not you, not on this message board) are alt-righters acting in bad faith.
I suspect that her behavior from her perch at the NYT will be rather different. At Verge, she was covering tech at a more granular level, which involved engaging with bigots. At the NYT it makes sense to stay above the fray, since the audience is a more general one.
I doubt whether we will see a lot of explicit hostility towards white males moving forwards from her.
Yes, she is leaving motherboard which is owned by Vice Media. Vice co-founder Gavin McInnes and ex-commentator Gavin McInnes are the founders of the Proud Boys, a racist white nationalist group.
The Proud Boys claim to not be racist because they want to cull the ‘weak’ whites as well as minorities. While Vice Media as a whole may not be terrorist worshiping assholes a few are and their fans are related to some of this. They hate the NYT and being fragile cowards will try to take any example of white racism to try and self justify their own bigotry and fear.
I won’t link to cites for this because I don’t want to drive traffic to these sites, but it is a popular topic of discussion.
Quinn Nortons tweets were taken out of context, the guy who got fired from Netflix said the N-word out of context, both were classed as racist, so why are Jeongs racist jokes, which they were, any different?
They did, they showed her making racist jokes, by NYTs own standard, context is irrelevant, like it was with Quinn Norton.
Again, why wasn’t this allowance given for Quinn Norton?
Nope, she literally got fired within hours of getting the position.
No, I was talking about Quinn Norton, how about you read my post properly next time.
We do though last time I checked. She kept her job at NYT. Quinn Norton didn’t, neither did the guy at Netflix.
I do forgive her, it’s not her I’m really bothered about, it’s the hypocrisy of the NYT and the standard they set rather than Jeong.
You are bothered by the supposed hypocrisy of a newspaper? You got an easy life with no troubles to be worried about?
Perhaps this happens to be the point at which they said we can’t keep doing this. At the very least if it becomes new precedent to the effect of time+apology+change of conduct = rehabilitation for future cases, it’s progress.
Gavin McInnes hasn’t been part of Vice Media for 10 years. From Jeongs CV it appears she was only a contributor in the last few years. Sounds like you’re trying to do guilt by association.
A few things. Quinn not only did not apologize, but she was disparaging actual minorities, not the ruling class, she was doing so with an avowed white supremacist. I do see a completely different dynamic at work when you complain about the majority who is benefiting from power structures that are harming you, and complaining about a minority that the power structures that are benefiting you are already harming.
Netflix is a different story, as it is a different company, owned by different people, and a charge of hypocrisy is pretty silly when you are making the charge that two different groups of people reacted differently to two different things. I’m not sure I agree with that decision, but the call was on the line with investors and other powerful people on the company who do make these sorts of decisions. They apparently didn’t want the head of the company to be the sort ofmperson who has to repeatedly ask why he can’t say slurs.
Doesn’t sound like you’ve forgiven her, if you are still going on about how her words offended you. And the hypocrisy that you see is only in front of you because you are holding it up in front of your face to hide from reality.
It’s not about it just being a newspaper, it’s about a precedent it’s setting, and considering the NYT is a standard for being for integrity and justice as a media outlet, there’s a reason why people were up in arms about this.
Agreed. I think that’s beginning to happen considering the issues with Trevor Noah and the guy who directed the Guardians of the Galaxy film James Dunn.
You misread my point, I wasn’t blaming vice, but Gavin McInnes goons.
Feel free to go out to 8chan or the current stormer (dark web) site if you think i’m full of it.
And is that precedent minorities who make fun of white people and apologize aren’t treated the same as white people who make fun of minorities and don’t apologize?
