Of course white privilege is a real thing. The storytelling and narratives show that they exist but none of the anecdotal stuff proves that they are significant drivers of the disparities in society. I think opeople have used Crit race theory to attribute every goddam thing in the world to institutional racism, white privilege, microaggressions etc. It gets a lot of people rolling their eyes.
When we see cops shooting black people disproportionately to white people, we hear claims that cops are racist. We look into it and we discover that cops do not shoot black people disproportionately to white people after accounting for SES. We see studies that say that cops HARASS black people more frequently but do not shoot them more frequently. But nope, we still have people who put their anecdotal experience ahead of these studies.
One premise of crit race theory is that American society has been created by whites for whites. And that all the racial disparities are due to the lopsided power that whites wield in society. I think proves things through anecdote and narrative storytelling. This is fine in the legal theory setting in which it was first introduced. It showed that neutral laws could in fact still have profoundly racist effects (or at least perpetuate racist conditions). Then it was exported to other areas of social science and lost some of its analytical framework along the way. By the time it got to the SJWs, I think it had become a bunch of axiomatic statements about the role of race in society.
Whether you realize it or not, crit race theory is where a lot of the modern notions of race and society on the far left are coming from. Crit race theory specifically objects to liberalism’s attempts at fairness and objectivity. It takes a far more combative and aggressive stance.

There is nothing new about Hannity and Limbaugh has been around since Reagan. Trump is not the natural result of anything. He won because he was saying things that no other politician was saying because saying these things had become politically toxic. Or so we thought.
This was the danger of using accusations of racism to shut white people up. They shut up alright, but then expressed themselves in the voting booths. We never engaged them, we never tried to convince them. We just vilified them. So they thought (and rightly so) that we were just shutting them down to avoid argument. And it was one thing when you were shutting down the David Dukes of the world, it was another thing when you were shutting down more moderate folks.

Police shoot blacks at about 2.5 times the rate they shoot whites. Blacks have a poverty rate about 3 times as high as whites. There are population distribution issues and things like that but once you take SES into account the gross disparities get a lot harder to see.
