New Yorkers or others: I'm in Times Sq. Recommend some Chinese food!

Hey, here I am in Time Square. Took the Acel from Philly to Penn Station in NYC, as recommended. Can someone recommend some a Chinese restaurant.

I desire authentic (relative term) Chinese food. Would even venture to China Town (distance…cost???) I don’t need some upscale hokey joint. Best Chinese food I ever had was in China Town Phila, and SF.

Anyone?

You’ve never failed me before, and this is ‘last minute’, but let’s see what you can do before 5.30pm EDT.

 Thanks!

Try the Orange Chicken, extra hot & spicy. The shrimp toast is good, but make sure to get the boiled dumplings and some steak-on-a-stick. It goes well with white wine.

 I get it, wise guy!

If you want to stay in Times Square, go to Ollie’s on 44th, b’tn Broadway and 8th.

Chinatown is way downtown, but obviously better. Try Hop Kee on Mott Street. You’d have to take the N or R train from Times Square to Canal.

Second the recommendation for Ollie’s. For the really good stuff, take the N, Q, R or W trains down to Canal Street and ask around.

Peking Duck House, 24 Mott St. @ Pell is just about the best damned place for Peking Duck.

Try a sizzling hot pot at New York Noodletown, 28 Bowery. You might catch Chow Yun Fat eating there.

Or, I guess you could go to Ollie’s.

Sorry for Philster . That title just made me hungry. I can second Canal Street, but I didn’t have a name of a place. I asked some people who know better, and I got this list:

Vong- thai food.
Vong is located at 200 East 54th Street, New York NY 10022, between 3rd and 2nd Avenue. For reservations, please call (212) 486-9592.
Penang- Malaysian food
240 Columbus Ave, New York 10023
At 71st St
Phone: 212-769-8889
Yama- sushi
38 Carmine St, New York 10014
Btwn Bedford & Bleecker St
Phone: 212-989-9330
OG - pan- asian food
507 E 6th St, New York 10009
Btwn Ave A & B
Phone: 212-477-4649

I was told that these places have delicious food at mid-range prices.

You had to go and mention Thai!

Hmmm…if my travel buddy opts for China Town, we’ll do it, or we can hit Ollies. Anyone hear of Chin Chin (Concierge pick).

Try the giant bowls of soup at Ollies.

Ruby Foos has some really good pan-asian but it’s a bit pricy.

Philster, If you have a Concierge, by all means go with what he/she says. He’s/She’s the one who can come up with Theatre Tickets for shows/concerts that have been sold out to us mere mortals for years. By all means, don’t piss off your connection. (Besides; he/she may have percent-off discounts or drink special coupons for you from the places he/she recommends.)

The Concierge is the person you want to tip well and Ask Favors Of.

I eat this at Ollie’s about once a month…Cantonese Noodle Soup with Roast Pork, add Wontons. I put a good amount of soy sauce and hot oil. Delicious.

If you like big bowls of soup, I recommend Mee Noodle. They have 2 locations: lower east side and 9th and 51st. Both are bit too far from my office to go there regularly, but their noodle soups are the best. Don’t expect much ambience, which is why I didn’t recommend it to Philster.

I’m off…let you know where we go and how it was…

I have missed dinner, but I was going to recommend Ollie’s too- it’s awesome!

And all these recommendations aren’t enough for you, I went to the men’s room in Ollie’s on Saturday night and found ahead of me in the urinal was Richard Kind, of “MAD ABOUT YOU,” ‘SPIN CITY’ and “CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM.”

I would have asked him for an autograph, but he had something in his hand at the moment that prevented him from gripping a pen.

Ruby Foo’s is good pan-Asian stuff. A bit pricey and really for beautiful people but the food is great.
