If we think of the contents of the boxes as indeterminate-until-opened, then there should be no problem theorizing a law like the one you describe. But if its supposed to be that the contents of the boxes are determined from the moment the boxes appear, then postulating a law like the one you describe incurs all the same problems we’ve already been talking about concerning backward causation.
Of course I’m not so convinced there’s anything terribly wrong with backward causation.
Still, in a case like the one you’ve described, we might as well say that the contents of the boxes causes the choice, rather than the other way around. So we can avoid backward causation in this example, though at the apparent cost of the chooser’s free will.
But of course that makes the example importantly disanalogous to the original Newcomb scenario, since the alien isn’t supposed to be causing my choice but only predicting it.
So it looks like if we want to keep your example analogous to the original, it needs to include an element of backward causation. But then, as several others have remarked, if we allow for backward causation as the mechanism by which the alien makes his prediction, then of course we should pick only one box. The problem arises, rather, when what’s involved is not backward causation but simply an uncanny but perfectly natural predictive power. And predictive powers are exactly what you were hoping to abstract out of the scenario. Looks like they may be essential to the scenario, though.
