News audio from President Trump

I get most of my news on the radio while driving my commute. It seems that there is a difference of the “quality” of the audio from Trump versus Obama. Firstly, has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me. Secondly, is there some difference in the way audio is being captured / provided that is driving the difference.

It sounds to my ear like more of the clips of Trump speaking are being captured by a mic in the room with him, but not necessarily a mic he is speaking into (a podium mic). That seems like it would be the simplest explanation, but again, on the radio I can’t tell if a clip is from a podium speech or something else.

Bonus question - in several clips of trump speaking there is a cacophony of what sounds like shutter clicking going on. To be expected when any public figure is making themselves available to the press, but it seems like a new sound, one I am not used to hearing with clips from a president. Are those camera shutters? Press corps using film cameras?

Your first guess is probably accurate. The reporter may be capturing Trump’s remarks as he’s walking rather than being at a podium. Another explanation is that for whatever reason, the reporter was not plugged into the room’s audio system, and had to grab whatever sound he could with a handheld mic.

DSLR cameras have shutters. They are a much higher level camera than the ones in our phones and are the choice of professional photographers.
