Next Car Game: Wreckfest

On sale again for $20 due to the black friday sale. So if you missed it last time, I highly recommend grabbing it now.

I’ll grab it, also subscribing to this thread. I mean, if I’m not participating, who the heck else has it within them to be second to last every race?

Cool. We usually play friday nights. We’ll probably play more often as it gets closer to release and more content is ready. I’m trying not to get burned out on its incomplete stage by playing it too much, but it’s in a very playable form right now.

Incidentally, a lot of people are telling me they’ll get it at release just to avoid early access. This doesn’t make any sense. Bugbear has gotten more than twice their anticipated funding through early access (they’re going back and doing stuff they didn’t think they’d have the budget for, like full tire physics simulation), they’ve got a track record, and it’s already in a fun playable form. The odds it’s just going to drop off the map are very slim.

But the early access price is a reward for supporting them early. It’s likely to go up to $40 or $50 upon release. So people are either going to pay twice+ as much to have less product (since they could’ve been having fun with the early access version) for no reason, or, as I suspect in a few cases, what will happen is something like:

“Oh, I’ll get it when it’s released… Oh, it’s released. $40? Fuck that, I’ll wait for a sale. [6 months later] Oh, okay, it’s $20 on sale” at which point they either get what they could have now, and at the same price, or they say “oh, well you guys aren’t playing as much as you were 6 months ago, so I’m just going to skip it”

Very frustrating and pointless. And I suspect that if they just sold it as a discounted preorder, people would buy it up. But somehow having more product (a fun early access version) makes people less likely to buy it.

So if you think you’ll get the game at some point, grab it now, as cheap as it’ll be for a long time, and have fun with it.

I didn’t anticipate the discount would get larger, but it’s on sale for the next 48 hours on the steam front page for $15. Definitely grab it at this price, I’m sure it won’t be cheaper until long after release.

How does the game perform in the bigger online matches? My rigg fulfills the recommended specs.

If they had a Mac client, I’d be T-boning y’all right now at that crossroads.

There must be some trick to the destruction derby mode that I’m not getting.

When you hit another car, aren’t you damaging yours just as much?

Doesn’t it make sense to stay out of the fray as much as possible and pick on the damaged winners at the end? If so, that’d make for badly designed gameplay.

Don’t know about the game but in real destruction derby drivers try to reverse into each other to protect the engine.

There are occasional slowdowns since the game is still being optimized, but for the most part it’s fairly consistent.

I think you take less damage if you’re the aggressor. If you t-bone someone, you’d take less damage in your front than if you collide with someone head on or if someone were to hit you. Not 100% sure on that, but it seems to be that way. There’s also a deathmatch derby mode where there are respawns and the total kills matter, rather than last man standing where you want to be the last man alive.

The videos I posted earlier were more destruction-oriented figure 8s. I figured I’d post a video of the more pure racing experience. Obviously it’s still pretty violent. I took that a few hours ago. I’ll probably post a derby video tonight.

I think we’re up to 14 or 15 of us who have it now. Last chance to grab it at $15 before 10am pacific tomorrow. Chaotic figure 8 video from tonight

I’m organizing a game in about 3 hours, hopefully there are a bunch of us. I’m going to stream it using steam’s new broadcasting feature. If you’re interested in checking out the game, go to steam settings->account->opt in beta, restart steam, then right click someone’s name on the friends list and select “watch game”.

That game looks like a lotta fun! I loved Flatout for PS2, and I’ll be looking for that one for PS4. I don’t do the PC games, so I’ll have to wait, but your video clips are entertaining!

Wreckfest is not 50% off on steam.

Been waiting a couple of months on a new update. It’s going to be a big one - they’re reworking the driving physics to be more accurate including simulations of tire physics and suspension and all that good stuff.

Along with multiplayer conveniences that obviously should’ve been available when they launched multiplayer like changing/tweaking your car between races, proper track switching and track lists, and all that good stuff.

One of the best features is that they’re going to allow you to use bots in multiplayer. So instead of having 5 people to start with, and having a pretty empty race, you can have 5 people and 19 bots. And then when 5 more people join, you’ll have 10 people and 14 bots, and so on. That’ll help when starting games up and waiting for people, or you could just make private matches with some friends and load the game with plenty of bots.

I’ve been playing less lately in anticipation of the patch, but it’s taking a little longer than expected. But last I heard they plan to release it in January, so I’ll be getting right back into it when it drops.
