Dirt 2

Dirt 2 was released for the PC today. The demo is available here, or on Steam.

The console versions were released a few months back, so people here may already have experience with the game. They delayed the PC release for a few months because they wanted to do a proper port and beef up the graphics with the stated goal of making the best looking racing game ever.

It fully supports directx 11, which makes for a lot of cool features, but it should still look great on dx9/dx10 cards.

I’m not too much of a racing game fan, but I like rally racing more than other types. I’m tempted to buy the game, even though I just got 8 gazillion hours of gaming ahead of me through the recent steam sales, but this game looks like a lot of fun, is only $40, and they did the proper thing by releasing a better PC version, something I want more developers to do, so I want to support them.

I guess I’ll see how the demo strikes me. Anyone else have it?

In a fit of appreciation spending, I bought it for the PC as well. I already got a 360 version for my birthday and I’m happily slogging through that one, but still - companies that make proper PC ports deserves to be rewarded.

The game is still all wrapped up, though. I probably won’t play it, since I loathe playing racing games with a mouse and keyboard; it’s one of the very few things I prefer a console controller for.

I use a joystick for PC racing games. They don’t take up as much space as a wheel & pedals and still give a great level of control. Plus you can use them for flight sims.

You can play the game with your xbox 360 controller on your pc (or any other gamepad) - if it’s wired, simply plug it in to a usb port, and if it’s wireless you can get the microsoft wireless gaming receiver. I got my mine for $15 from newegg a while back… it allows any wireless xbox 360 peripheral to be used with PC.

For some reason it appears to be discontinued and out of stock on some sites, so you may have to do some searching around or check ebay.

I was probably going to pass it up but, if what you say is true, I might buy it just to support them for doing the right thing too. Heck, it might even be fun.

Give the demo a spin. It is very very pretty, and the types of offroad rally type stuff it does is more fun than road/track races IMO, so I may get it. The only reason I wouldn’t is the combination of having like literally 16 new games over the last few weeks that I already have on my plate.

I think it may be the first game fully rendered with DX11. I don’t have a DX11 card so I can’t see all the fancy new stuff - but just the regular dx9/dx10 render is awesome looking.

The engine is not DX11 from the ground up. But they do use the API’s to pretty good effect. There’s a video on the net showing off some of the extras. They use tessellation to create realistic cloth (flags and banners) and much more detailed and numerous crowds. They also do it for something I really want ot see more of in the future. Water. Waves and wakes as the cars move through water and mud are amazing! I’ve never seen it outside of pre-rendered footage. Lighting and HDR are much improved. The difference between the DX 11 and DX 9 versions of the game is VERY noticeable.

I should mention that a lot of ATI 5000 series cards come bundled with this game to show off the delicious DX11 goodness, so if you plan to upgrade to one of those cards soon then hold off on your purchase and just get it that way.

Does anyone have this game? I’m curious about an aspect of the multiplayer. In GRID you could only pick events as they appeared to you in single player … so you could only use certain track/race type game modes if they appeared in the game’s single player career. This was annoying since, for example, there were only 1 or 2 drift-race events, but drift-race was a cool game mode and I wanted to try it on other tracks. Or there were some tracks you could only race using open wheel cars but no GT cars.

Does Dirt 2 do the same thing, or can you mix and match game modes/car types/track types at will?

Okay, so I bought the game. It’s a lot of fun.

Unfortunately it seems that when they worked to improve the PC version, they only did the graphics - the interface and multiplayer is very clearly designed for consoles and could use massive improvement. The RV/home base hub system works well enough, but the time to get to races and between races takes too long. Consoles use animated load screens to keep you occupied while they slowly load stuff from dvd… but the animations are timed to last as long as it would take an xbox to load that information. PCs do this way faster (and mine in particular since I have a raptor drive) - so my computer is done loading data about halfway through the animation (where they show you moving on the world map, achievements, etc), and the rest of the time I just have to sit there and wait for the animations to complete. So they’re meant for something to distract you during a long load time and turned into something that artificially creates a long load time.

The multiplayer is a mixed bag. I only have a few hours of experience with it. When it works well, it’s very very fun. But it’s very clearly a console multiplayer experience. The main way to play lets you choose from three major categories of racing - non-contact (rally/trailblaizer), contact (raid, land rush, rally cross) and… other modes (domination, last man standing). But from there you just get dropped seemingly randomly into a lobby with other people, with a random map/game mode picked. The only control the people in the lobby have over what to play is that they get to veto one random map/game mode by vote… at which point they are assigned another random mode which they have no control over. This is possibly the dumbest system I have ever seen and very annoying.

There’s no control over the other options either - if you like damage to affect performance and not just look pretty - no go in the default mode. Want to force people to use certain camera modes or manual transmission? Nope. It’s all the same options. This is, as far as I can tell, the main way to play the game, so that’s pretty dissapointing.

You don’t get a choice on which lobby to join either - and it won’t even tell you what your ping is to the server. Not even one of those “you’re too dumb to understand milliseconds, so here are 3 bars of performance” types of connectivity meters that they use in other parts of the game.

On the other hand, they do allow the creation of custom races which alleviates these problems. From there you can set track rotation, car types, options like forced camera, manual, full damage system, which grade of cars are used, etc. But they don’t allow you to name or describe your custom game in any way - it’s just whatever your games for windows live tag is, which is dumb. It can take a while for games to fill up this way, so it’s best if you have a few friends together to get the game going.

The actual in-game multiplayer racing experience is excellent if it happens to pick a good host. The net code can be seamless and it’s very exciting turning the corner around that final bend when you know someone is right on your tail. With a lesser host… it’s not terrible, but you get some warping, and some points where the cars go semi-transparent and become unhittable… I think this may represent times when their position is not up to date with the rest of the clients and it doesn’t want to create phantom collisions.

The non-rally/trailblazer modes, where there’s contact, features a lot of it. People race very violently. The rally and trailblazer modes feature other cars as ghosts with no collisions - you’re strictly racing against the clock competitively.

The game is beautiful. I’m only running the DX9 version, and I’ve heard the DX11 version is significantly better, but it’s still the best looking racing game I’ve played. The texture detail and sometimes background detail could use a little work (especially poly counts), but the lighting and particle systems are the best I’ve seen. It really feels like you’re kicking up mud everywhere and it looks great. It’s the only game where I actually watch most of the race replays because it’s so nice to look at.

I can’t say how much variety there is yet because I’ve only played a fraction of the way through. There are only 9 basic areas with a few tracks each, so I’d prefer some more variety, but what tracks are in there are pretty well designed.

I can’t comment on the accuracy of the driving model or anything like that, because I’m not a big racing car guy so I don’t have much of a reference to compare it to. Based on perusing some reviews, it’s definitely less technical/realistic than sim-style racing games, but more accurate than arcadey stuff like most of the need for speed games. Most people like the balance.

So there’s some negative stuff in there, but I’m having a lot of fun playing this game. I would recommend it. Best racing game I’ve ever played - although part of it is because I think rally racing is a lot more fun than racing on roads.

Edit: Oh, and I (and a friend) had a problem with the game, both the demo and full game, crashing when you started it. It relates somehow to the graphics settings, I think. To fix this problem, run the game with the command line switch -gamemode and then go in and change the options to suit your preferences. Then restart it, and the game will continue to work from then on.

Ok, after having spent a few hours more in multiplayer, and playing in the custom game mode, I have to declare this game Totally Awesome. Custom took care of some of my concerns - I’m a reliable host, as much as you can be without having a proper dedicated server, and you can completely customize the game mode, maps, and other options like vehicle damage, camera locked in cockpit view, and others. The cockpit view one is particularly fun - I like using that view because it’s immersive, but it puts you at a disadvantage to people who use better views - but if everyone is forced to use it, you can have a lot of fun… kicking gravel up onto other people’s windshields, going through a puddle and being blind for 2 seconds and then going off a cliff… great stuff.

Sometimes things would happen that were so awesome that I couldn’t help but giggle. Which brings me to another complaint - who the fuck doesn’t have a push to talk key on their voice chat? Everyone else heard my giggling when I sent someone barrel rolling off a cliff after a little tap on the rear wheel since it was an open mic.

But yeah… under the right circumstances, this game is easily the most fun I’ve had playing a racing game. I recommend getting it. If some people get it, I’m going to try to start scheduling some SDMB races through our steam group.

Edit: You don’t necesarily have to have steam, we could hook up via games for windows live too.

I don’t understand this post. Are you saying you bought the PC version of the game but have no intention of playing it? Out of appreciation for the devs? You are giving them money for a game you prefer on consoles to say thanks for making it on the PC?

Does not compute.

Those of you who are playing it on the pc–do I need to buy an analog controller (wheel, gamepad, joystick?) or is does the keyboard work?

I would imagine the keyboard works as an input method, but I wouldn’t want to use it. You really want analog controls. You can grab a decent usb gamepad for $20 or use xbox 360 controllers if you have any.

I’ve had this for the 360 since it came out and I’ve had a ton of fun with it.

I am tempted to get the PC version just because Codemasters did the right thing - waited a while to release it while they tweaked it, and have apparently produced the best-looking racing game ever.

But, just like Senor Beef I have a huge gaming glut now - that Steam sale has me working through Borderlands, Chronicles of Riddick, and Dead Space. Also Torchlight and Modern Warfare 2.

As to the multiplayer - I normally only play with people I know, so custom matches are the only thing I know and are a ton of fun. Forcing cockpit-only views is a great leveler! Can you use the Steam community to invite friends to a custom game on the PC version?

And for the chat - are you saying that the chat is always on? No push-to-talk option? Any way to use Steam chat instead of the in-game chat?

I don’t think you can connect to a lobby through steam. The game runs games for windows live for friends list/matchmaking purposes unfortunately. But you can maintain a friends list and invite people that way.

As for the voice chat - it’s not always on, but you set a minimum volume threshold so that it’s voice activated. No push to talk. Stupid, I know, but that’s how it is. Obviously if you don’t want to chat at all you can turn it off or mute your mic.

I don’t know if you could use steam’s voice chat but that wouldn’t really solve anything since that’s (last time I used it) totally an open mic anyway. You can set voice chat to only be between people on your (gfwl) friends list or party - but yeah, it basically works the same way as xbox live, ie mostly functional but sucks.

Thanks for the (disappointing) info.

Yeah, it’s got some dumb design decisions definitely. However it’s easily the most fun I’ve ever had playing a racing game, and I’ve had a hard time peeling myself away from it since I got it, so I still fully recommend it.

I’ve been running custom games to negate some of the multiplayer negatives. They can take a while to get off - getting the second and third people to show up can take a while, but once you’ve got 3 and you start racing it fills up (to 8) pretty fast. If anyone wants to play some custom games with me, add my live account (senorbeef0) to your friends list.

So I just bought this game today and have been playing online for a few hours with SenorBeef. Wow, this game has it all. The sounds and visuals are amazing and the game play is a blast. It looks like I will be playing this game quite a bit. Only annoying thing is the silly animations and logos you have to look at while the game is starting up or loading.

You guys should buy it and join us at the races!

Oh, and I’m speaking as a guy who doesn’t generally like racing games.

It just to bad Codemasters decide to use GFWL ( Games for Live Windows ) and lockout over 166 unsupported countries from racing DIRT 2 online. Mircosoft only has 26 supported countries that can race DIRT 2 online.

This been a big shock to those of us that are use to racing the Whole world online with Flatout 2 and GRID.

This is a sad day for online racing if game makers like Codemasters continue to use GFWL and Microsoft restrict who can race online and divide the online racing community!! :frowning:

GFWL stole my game

Attention. This game is a scam, as it works on Windows-Live

Will Codemasters give new CD-key to those players in unsupport countires that need…
