Next season of Sherlock - back to the future?

New trailer just out, but I can’t find it on youtube. So far I only find it embedded within this article.

Trailer

Is the Christmas special definitely on December 25? I see it will be available on Amazon on January 12, so The US will have seen it by then, but I hope we are Christmas Day, too.

No, they haven’t announced a date yet for the spesh, it has often been referred to as a Christmas special but Moffatt, Gatiss, Vertue et al made a point of not doing so at SDCC IIRC.

The 25th is a Friday so I’d expect Doctor Who and Eastenders that evening, as is usual at Christmas. Monday 28th will be the Boxing Day holiday for many in the UK, so BBC1 will also want big shows on both Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th. I’d bet a small amount that Sherlock is the big Sunday night drama.

Woohoo - love it!

In the past with BBC shows, the Christmas Special has always followed the series as otherwise it would contain major spoilers. This one seems as though it might be a stand-alone, so it’s possible.

Looks like it’ll be on New Year’s Day: http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/24/entertainment/sherlock-holmes-abominable-bride-feat/index.html

Yay! It’s broadcast on the same day in both the U.K. and the States. We won’t have to wait weeks to see it!

And we can open the discussion thread right away without fearing spoilers.

In both Doctor Who and Sherlock, Moffat’s shown a love for long, complex story arcs involving the Fate of the Universe. Some like it, some don’t, but I think there’s always a place for a single episode, zero-plothole, satisfying mystery every so often. Given that the Christmas (New Year’s, now?) special is a standalone, I’ve got high hopes.

I hope it cheers you up to think that each Sherlock episode is 90 minutes, with no adverts.
How much of each hour of US TV is advertising? 15 minutes?

(I’m not criticising - it’s simply the consequences of how the different TV companies are funded.)

16 minutes, I think - but Sherlock is broadcast on PBS without commercial interruption.

Hopefully this time they won’t chop out a few minutes to make it fit into American format, like they’ve done with previous episodes.

The production company edited the first two seasons to fit the PBS slot. (Versions on Netflix are complete.) But that practice ended with Season 3. (Or Series 3?) So I doubt they’ll regress for this show.

Bwuh? It’s also going to be shown in theaters, with 20 minutes of additional footage.

Story here.

500 theaters nationwide in the U.S. will be showing it.

Wow! And I bet I know just the local theater that might show it…

Here’s a Radio Times interview with co-creator Mark Gatiss about it: All the latest TV news, previews, spoilers, what to watch recommendations and opinion - Radio Times

I love Mark Gatiss. I saw in an earlier trailer that the Christmas special Mycroft will sport lambchop sideburns!

And there’s another new (brief) trailer up on the BBC One website, containing a few seconds of footage we haven’t seen before.

I have been going to fFathom Events since they announced that it would be in theaters because I didn’t realize they would announce the theaters until the tickets went on sale.

So, bright and early today I went and found out that a theater in my town will be showing it! I’m so excited!

If my daughter doesn’t want to go I may just go alone.

Theater locations listed on this website. Two in my area!

I already bought my ticket for the showing at Universal Citywalk. I’ll be sitting with a bunch of fangirls I know from Facebook. It’s gonna be great!

(If any Dopers go to this, I’ll be wearing a green carnation and my “The game is afoot!” pin I bought at Ren Fair. Come up and say hi!)
