Next Wheel of Time book

Isn’t Moiraine pretty much the only female character that isn’t a shrew-harpy? Or am I thinking of someone else? It’s not easy to remember all of the gazillion characters years after reading the books.

Actually, the majority of characters are fairly minor and can be altered, combined, or cut without affecting the plot greatly. Furthermore, much of the text can be handed straight to the costume and prop departments. Hell, the series might be much better on the big screen than in print.

No, they’re all horrendous shrew-harpies.

I’
m mildly curious. Can anyone explain this one to me?

Nynaeve’s Two Rivers upbringing and “career track” to wisewoman included a massive dose of distrust of the Aes Sedai. When she found out that, indeed, SHE was a viable candidate for Tar Valon, she had a bit of an inner tussle…

IIRC there’s a couple barsluts. They’re the only ones…and that’s because they typically don’t get any lines.

Well, unless RJ drops something that’s been almost has heavily prophecied as The Last Battle, she’ll be back.

Matt tends to grow on you…well, on me anyway. I actually like him, especially later on.

Not yet. She DID get married which seems to have calmed her down a bit (no ‘she finally got laid’ jokes please). In addition, she has had herself taken down a notch or two several times, and she isn’t the baddest new kid on the block anymore (one of the leashed ones who’s name escapes me atm is stronger than she is in the power).

Not yet, but stay tuned. Between the rebels and the Egwene’s dreams about the Seanchan coming in and destroying the tower…well, I’m taking odds that the whole place is a smoking hole in the ground sometime in the next two books.

No joy there. I actually think he is going to have a major part to play before the end, and that he will possibly wind up as one of Egwene’s warders (maybe getting laid will calm HER down some…oh, did I say that out loud??).

Jordan seems to have a very narrow view of the range of, er, womanly emotions say. They only seem to have a few modes of operation.

The scene where Rand sees the history of the Aiel in Rhuidean is absolutely brilliant. I think it’s one of the best-written sequences I’ve ever read.

I really hope you’re thinking of Gawyn. I see VERY little chance of Galad becoming a warder.

I see Galad either dying nobly, or perhaps, after confronting Rand, joining the Black tower. Of course, he might also just bring in the Whitecloaks to save someone he doesn’t like(Rand, channelers, etc.) because he knows it’s the right thing to do. And isn’t he supposed to marry Berelain?

I just hope there’s not a cop-out in the final battle. We’ve got all sorts of military forced lined up…if we are stuck with a standoff that doesn’t go anywhere, I’ll be mad.

I fully expect to see another 100 companions, the Ogier Army, Mat’s artillary corps, the Spears of the Dragon, the Legion, the Seanchean, Black and White Towers united, the borderland armies, and the heroes of the Horn take on the legions of the Dark One.

I don’t think Galad’s going to die–at least, not until he meets Berelain (which will happen soon if he’s the Whitecloak that keeps trying to escape from the Shaido–anybody read the KoD excerpt available in the New Spring paperback? I’m told it’s Galadcentric.) and comes to terms with the fact that the Big Bad Dragon Reborn is his half-brother. I would not be surprised to see Gawyn take the dirt nap, however. Here’s hoping that Egwene gets a little nookie before he does.

I really can’t wait to read the Last Battle, but what I’m more concerned with is the aftermath–I want to see the beginning of the new Age.

And what happens if a Hero of the Horn is reborn while they’re out there fighting? Just a random theory, but those Hero black-and-white-masked male/female twins that herald the end of an Age are probably getting ready to take up residence when Elayne gives birth … and the Wise Ones probably wouldn’t have pointed out that she’d be unable to channel while in labor unless she was going to go into labor at a time when she desperately needed to channel.

I quit after Book 8. Book 8 moved the plot forward about as far as one Chapter of book One. When was it that RJ got the good news that his publisher would just keep cranking them out? Wasn’t it supposed to be only 6 books? Anway, as each book after book one is read, less and less is moved forward, but it doesn’t decrease sharply until about book 6 or so. I really think the RJ writes about one chapters worth of plot-outline, hands it over to a couple of ghosts who drivel on for an entire book, then RJ comes back in, adds a few excellent paragraphs, and ships the whole thing off. :dubious: Do note that Book one is pretty darn good.

She’s actually one of the less shrewish harpies. But characters who refuse to give people basic information and explanations due to the fact they “don’t want to waste time” make me CRAZY.

I just finished #5. At the moment, the only un-obnoxious female characters are Aviendha (annoying, but not unbearable yet) and Min (who just hasn’t done much.)

Nynaeve seems like the kind of person you want around when the sh*t’s hitting the fan - but don’t want to be within 10 miles of the rest of the time. I think Lan must be brain-damaged from too much time in the Blight.

Did anyone else keep expecting the Aiel to ride sandworms?

Quit now. Seriously. #5 is the last one with more good than bad.

Gawyn is a done deal…he’s already in the bag. In fact, they’ve already had virtual sex. Galad however…he keeps asking about Egwain, he obviously cares deeply about her. I assume you mean the whole White Cloak thing. He won’t be a White Cloak much longer IMO…he’ll find out a dark friend is controlling the White Cloaks, he’ll discover they were holding his mother, or he’ll simply choose Egwain over the White Cloaks and follow his heart for once. At any rate…I did mean Galad and I DO think he will eventually become her warder. But its just my own opinion obviously and probably not shared with anyone else. Maybe not even Jordan.

Disagree…every book had some redeeming characteristic that saved it from total suckage. Myself, the worst book was probably #9…but then in the end there Rand cleans the source. I was like…wow. I’ve actually enjoyed the story to date…my one real regret (besides the bloated prose of the later books) is how long it takes this furry maniac to put out a god damn book.

How can you say that!

Two words: Dumai’s Wells.
The end of book 6- It’s worth the wait.
Hell, I will still re-read the ‘Black Tower’ chapter just for the shivers it gives me.

I went to lunch, and you beat me to it.

That’s the big battle at the end of Lord of Chaos I presume? My deale… friend who’s lending me the series tells me its the best one in the series.

I’m taking a break for the moment though. Clearing my head with some nice Robin Hobb.

Which series? I like Hobb, though my Lady does not. She thinks that Fitz is the saddest character ever. She also doesn’t like Spider Man for the same reason.

I think that the Tawny Man series was really well done, myself.

As for Dumai’s wells…it’s not just the battle part of it. I don’t want to spoil too much, but suffice it to say that it is heartwrenching what happens to Rand.

Holy crap! I didn’t even think about that!

:: Leaps from the desk and dives toward the bookshelf ::

It wasn’t so much the books with Fitz, as it was the whole LiveShip series. Damn, those people were so unsympathetic. I hated all the characters, and at the end of the first book, I put it down and said aloud, “I hope they all die and the ships burn.”
