I’m looking for a 7" tablet and these two seem to be head of the class right now. I’m not interested in a potential 7" iPad as I have the original iPad (from my job) and I don’t love it.
First, is there shiny new, better Android 7"-er coming out before the holidays that I should consider waiting for? If not, which of these two do you prefer and why?
Reasons I like the Kindle: I get a lot of content from Amazon already; more storage including unlimited cloud; HDMI out; better speakers.
Reasons I like the Nexus 7: “Real” Android OS and all that comes with it; native Google apps I already use.
The question is, what do you want to do with it ?
Do you want to read books, and watch movies, and are willing to get Amazon Prime (free streaming video) ? Do you want getting books and movies to be pretty easy and you’re willing to pay for them (but at Amazon prices - so fair) ? - Definitely Kindle Fire HD
Do you want to hack at it, root it, install things downloaded from the internet rather than purchasing them, or run some specific apps that don’t exist in the Amazon App store ? Then Google Nexus One.
I have the Nexus. It’s a beautiful piece of technlogy but there not all that much I can do with it other than admire it. Everything it does my Galaxy SIII phone does. I gave it to my kids.
I’ve discovered that the bottom line for me is that for getting any real input production work done I need a physical keyboard. I use the phone to read emails and answer them and keep track of my ebay sales while mobile. The tablet sits in a space between. There was not really a space in my life I needed it. It’s too big to pocket and carry around like the phone, and If I’m at my desk with a full PC and keyboard and mouse available what’s the point?
Specs and price are very similar. Between the Kindle and Nexus if you are Amazon centric go with the Kindle. If you are looking for a more all around notebook PC replacement go with the Nexus.
Generally those use cases argue for a Kindle HD + Amazon Prime (and you can also add netflix). Unless you already have purchased your ebooks from the nook or apple store or something.
You can get a Kindle App for your Nexus 7 but you can’t get Amazon Prime Video/Amazon Video on Demand (unlike Netflix, on Amazon you can both Rent movies per view, as well as get a whole bunch all you can eat like Netflix, with Amazon Prime).
Sorry, missed the edit window, the reason I say + Amazon prime is that is where the Kindles really shine - you get a Tablet + what is essentially a cheaper netflix + one free e-book every month (to “borrow” - Kindle lending library)
I don’t have Prime now but I’m interested in it. I think I’m leaning towards the Kindle. I don’t need a laptop replacement. This will be an entertainment device. Now, is it worth and additional $50 for double storage? Most of the time I’ll be using it I’ll be on WiFi so I can use the cloud storage. If I’m on a plane or something, 16 GB should be enough for a movie or two plus whatever else. Or will I regret that decision?
I was torn between the two but then I ended up with the Nexus as I didn’t want to have to deal with “Customers Also Bought.” Although I found out that you can pay to get rid of those.
I love my Nexus. Another reason I got the Nexus was because I’d get updates for the Android, where with the Kindle there’s no guarantee that the OS would get updated. I also like that I could change my homescreen to look how I want it.
I do wish I could have Amazon Prime Video, but I can still use the kindle app and Amazon MP3.
I never buy anything more than the base models - I feel like extra storage on all the tablets is like options at the car dealership - where they really make the $ and badly overpriced. I doubt you’ll need the extra storage unless you want to buy & download more than one or two movies rather than stream them, or you have a large music collection and want to keep it all on your tablet.
