NFL 2023 Preseason Thread

He was definitely tapering off. But with the Bears he was still a pretty reliable red zone option with some terrible QB play.

I’d hoped the situation with Taylor wouldn’t come to this.

Same here. But I’m reading that many running backs and agents are upset about the negotiated franchise tag rates this contract season.

Ahhhh, the preseason. When all the holes in your team’s offensive line are papered over; the running back position is solidified not this year; all your rookies are “potential” plug in starters/allstars; the QB is completely healed and contract happy; healthy competition for all cornerback positions. A playoff berth is all but assured, advancement to the SB is openly talked on sports radio. It’s a wonderful time of the year to be a fan.

Rodgers goes all Will Smith on Payton over Hackett comments:

“It made me feel bad that someone who has accomplished a lot in the league is that insecure that they have to take another man down to set themselves up for some easy fall if it doesn’t go well for that team this year,” Rodgers told NFL+ in a sit-down interview after practice. “I think it was way out of line, inappropriate, and I think he needs to keep my coaches’ names out of his mouth.”

Oh, and (partially) because of the Jonathan Taylor ordeal, fans have named Jim Irsay as the worst owner in the NFL.

Irsay worst owner? Number 32? All the others tied at 31st?

Back to my Browns. Lifelong fan but they are not helping. At least I can laugh.

Since Jalen Ramsey has a meniscus tear, and is going to miss games, the Dolphins signed Eli Apple.

Apple and Tyreek Hill have a history of trash talking, but management got Hill’s ok to sign Apple.

If you’re looking for NepoBabies in the NFL to hate, here you go:

Bill Bidwell/Arizona Cardinals.
Virginia McCaskey/Chicago Bears
Mike Brown/Cincinnati Bengals
Rob Walton/Denver Broncos
Sheila Ford-Hemp/Detroit Lions
Janice/Cal McNair/Houston Texans
Jim Irsay/Indianapolis Colts
Clark Hunt/Kansas City Chiefs
Mark Davis/Las Vegas Raiders
Dean Spanos/Las Angeles Chargers
Stan Kroenke/L.A. Rams
Gayle Benson/New Orleans Saints
John Mara/NY Giants
Woody Johnson/ NY Jets
Jeffrey Lurie/Philly Eagles
Art Rooney/ Pittsburgh Steelers
Denise York/SF 49ers
Jody Allen/Seattle Seahawks
Amy Strunk/Tennesse Titans

I prefer to base my like or dislike, never hatred, of a person based on their actions.

Do you think Chiefs fans are bothered by the fact that the team was inherited. As a Giants fan, I’ve had my issues with John Mara, but they have won 2 super bowls during his tenure.

Clark Hunt was named Chairman in 2005. He (and his siblings and mother) inherited the Chiefs when his dad died in 2006. He had some bad missteps early, but he hired Andy Reid in 2013 and KC has been pretty damn good ever since and have won 2 of the last 4 Super Bowls.

KC fans are liking Clark Hunt just fine at the moment.

Did anyone realize that tonight is the Hall of Fame game? Maybe I’ll watch a couple of sets of downs.

I hadn’t realized it, in fact, until I’d heard it mentioned on the radio this morning. I generally find preseason football to be uninteresting, unless it’s the Packers, at which point, I’m watching it solely to see if the rookies and new players look to be any good.

I only realized it was on because I saw some Instagram post about something that happened during the game. It’s a weird and changing world.

I assume Rodgers did not take any snaps, since that’s about the only thing that might have convinced me to watch it as more than background noise.

It strikes me as bizarre to single out these children who essentially have inherited the family business. Doing so somehow implies that we should favor billionaire hedge fund managers, tech bros and oil tycoons instead. Talk about a fucked-up lens to view the world through.

If we’re going to crap on “nepobabies” I’d be more focused on the coaches’ kids who get awarded jobs after demonstrating no aptitude for coaching football (looking at you Reid and Belichick).

He didn’t even suit up; he was on the sidelines in a t-shirt. He did an interview with the announcers for a few minutes during the second half.

I don’t disagree with your overall point on coaches’ sons, but Steve Belichick is probably not the example you want: he was the defensive playcaller for the 2019 Super Bowl Champion Patriots, so “no aptitude” seems off base there.

When he was given his first job with the team he had no qualifications. And let’s face it, Bill handles the defense in every way that matters. Matt Patrica “called plays” and we see what a superstar he is.

This is pointless nitpicking, but what else is preseason for? Your statement is true, but it is also true of every new coach when they are hired for their first coaching job (unless they were a player), so… ?? Bill B. himself played a little football at a no-name college and got a degree in Economics. Should he not have been hired for his first job because he had no coaching experience?

You also did not say “qualifications” before, you said “aptitude.” My argument is that the younger Belichick has displayed more than “no aptitude.”

And let’s not forget Nate in Ted Lasso

Did he get hired because he interviewed well or because he was Belichick’s kid? We’re talking about neoptism in the NFL and there’s no argument that this isn’t that. If Patriots fans seriously think he’s the best candidate they could find for the “DC” position in New England, well I guess they deserve what they get.
