The Chiefs are reworking Patrick Mahomes’s contract, adding two years in the process. The new contract runs through 2033, worth a total of $504.75 million.
The NFL may well be holding an important Supplemental Draft this year. Gambling addict and former U of Cincinnati QB Brendan Sorsby has filed the necessary paerwork to be eligible for the supplental draft.
Sorsby was supposed to play for Texas Tech this year, but after admitting to a gambling problem (including betting on his own teams apparently) and entering rehab, he was suspended by the NCAA. And while they figure that out, he opted to see about entering this year’s supplemental draft.
I could see a few teams who might give him a try.
At what cost?
That is what is kinda fun/interesting about tje supplemental draft (if it happens). Teams are bidding blind rather than waiting for their pick, which could be fun.
My thinking is if Sorsby was anywhere near good enough to start in the NFL, he would have declared for the 2026 draft rather than try to play in the NCAA for another year. So anything above a 3rd rounder seems a stretch. But there are always NFL teams that are 1) QB needy and 2) Not so bright.
And, just to ensure the appearance of a certain poster, I’ll point out that ::whispering:: Josh Gordon ::whispering:: was a supplemental pick.
He was set to make $5 million or so in NIL money this year, so it’s not crazy to stay another year even if you are NFL ready. Crazy if you’re a top 3 overall pick, sure, but was he that? Or would he have been?
He was a QB in a pretty slim QB class last year. If he thought he was even just a top 5 QB last year rather than 2027 (where the QB class is perceived to be much stronger), returning to college (and putting off his massive first non-rookie contract), was a mistake. Not as bad as betting on your own team (will the NFL discipline him?) costing yourself millions, but still a mistake.
But if he’s allowed in, some team will take a chance on him.
He was probably betting on himself that one more year of college would raise his draft stock to the very top of next year’s draft.
As for a team taking a chance on him, I’m thinking Jets.
That’s a likely spot.
Or maybe Arizona.
Not that anyone had big expectations but the Jets QB situation may get much worse.
Sorsby’s gotta wait: No supplimental draft this year
Yeah, the NFL’s letter basically says “We aren’t a get out of jail free card for your issues”
He wasn’t a top prospect, anyway. The league has always been careful around gambling and have to be doubly so now that it’s more or less a major legitimate market.
And it sounds like they didn’t appreciate him trying to get them involved in his personal drama, either.
Well, he could play for an NFL team if he wanted to, but it would be as an undrafted player. He’d obviously get a worse contract (which is why players want to be drafted), but if he was dead set on playing and a team wanted him, he certainly could.
If he still has college eligibility left (which it sounds like he does), and hadn’t declared for this past draft, I’m not sure that he actually could, at least not for 2026.
AIUI, teams can’t sign “undrafted free agents” (UDFAs) coming out of college until after they go undrafted in the draft for which they were eligible.
Yeah, he can’t play in the NFL this year. It looks like his options are Canadian Football League or maybe the UFL? I don’t know if the CFL would touch him, and I don’t know if the UFL follows the same rules about adding a player who skipped the draft.
The UFL already wrapped up their 2026 season a couple of weeks ago. The CFL is already in Week 4 of their regular season (they start much earlier than the NFL), so unless a Canadian team is desperate for a quarterback who has zero experience under the Canadian rules, I don’t see it happening.
I didn’t realize he was still eligible for college.
I didn’t even realize it was happening. That’s certainly going well.

The stink from weeks ago was that the NCAA had suspended him for gambling, but he got a court injunction against that which, for now, made him eligible to play for Texas Tech in 2026.
He had filed for the supplemental draft, but I’m not certain that that affects his collegiate eligibility.
The injunction was temporary but, as the article notes, the stink was major.
So, he pulled his lawsuit, meaning the injunction no longer holds, and the NCAA ban is in force. He did so to file for the supplementary draft.
He’s ineligible to play college football for the foreseeable future. He can potentially be re-instated to play in college but he’d have to jump some big hoops at this point. Worth noting he “offered” to take a 2 game suspension as punishment, which I personally find hilarious.
The NFL may have been more sympathetic had he showed any remorse at all. But the lawsuit, the timing of his application for the draft (only 3 days before the deadline and after massive public backlash), and the swift and widespread condemnation of his actions make this really easy for them. They haven’t had a supplementary draft in a few years, so it’s not like they strongly need to justify having or not having one.
Thank you for the clarification.
So, he’s not ineligible because he’s run out of seasons of eligibility, but because the NCAA’s ban against him is in effect.
Indeed so. The NCAA ban is back in effect.
The supplemental draft is to handle cases where the player did not file for the regular draft but college eligibility has changed in the mean time. With the injunction reinstating his eligibility, he wouldn’t have been eligible for the supplemental draft because he could still play in college.
ETA: Wait, ineligible for college football or as a UDFA? He’s not eligible as a free agent because he hasn’t participated in a draft. He’s ineligible for college football because of the NCAA ban. Otherwise, his plan was to play at Tech this season. Still might be, but he’s turning rather toxic
